96 Cavalier 2.2, automatic. Idle is rough. It jerks when driving (like if you were running out of gas). Check engine light is on, code reads #2 misfire. The injector has been replaced and all spark plugs/wires have been replaced. Fuel is coming out the tail pipe. Smells like something is burning under the hood. There is oil around the edges of the engine block (I think it's the engine block). The temp gauge is slightly higher than usual. The check engine light will sometimes go away, then come back. When it comes back, that's when the car starts jerking.
When I am stopped at a light, the car acts like it's going to die every time regardless if the check engine light is on or not. The headlights and dash lights go dim. Battery has been replaced. The car does make a faint high pitched humming noise.
Also, when the car is on the whole engine is moving (shaking) a bit under the hood. Should it be moving around that much?
Sounds like there is a blown piston, to be sure have a compression test done on that #2 cylinder, if the reading is low, then you'll know.
A friend of mine had a 95 that did simular things only a little more,
it started smoking, dash lights flickered, etc. Finally, he had to get rid of it, the piston rod went through the engine block.
