HI, these sysmtoms can be caused by many issues that may be present within this vehicles front steering rack. i will list some trouble areas that you should inspect. you will find the issue in one or all of these areas stated below.

Inspection List--

1. Check the Steering gear on the power steering. this is a known problem area and can cause the sounds you are experiencing at this time. this gear may be worn.

2. Next, you will need to inspect the CV Half-shaft(remanufactured) CCT. Check this device and see if it is dry or damaged or worn. if the actual CV boot has slipped off or it is busted, it will allow the joint to dry up, in return, causing major damage that will lead to very loud sounds.

3. I would also inspect the Front wheel bearings as well. inspect for worn, dry or damaged bearing assembly. replace if damage is noticeable.

Please rate and have a great day:)

Why is there a clunking noise only when turning hard left, e.g., when parking or making a U-turn?

sounds like your cv joint needs replacing on that single side if you are hearing a grinding# How are your anti roll bar bushes and drop links? It may be a combination of things rather than just the one. Clunking and grinding do not necessarily go together but might be a symptom of a single issue.
Maybe Fixya should set up a sound file facility so that we can listen to such sounds too!!

Abs light on/grinding and clunking in turns on front left side of 2003 ford explorer

Sounds like left front loose wheel bearing knocking ABS sensor out of range causing ABS light to come on and causing grind noise at same location. Grinding noise is probably rotor rubbing on calipar.

2003 Chevy Silverado is making a clunking noise, on and off sometime over bumps. Also a deep grinding type noise in the same location while driving not constant

Hello Karla,

It sounds like you may have a bearing or CV joint going out. Your vehicle will need to be jacked up and inspected. It may be more than one problem too. Its possible the dragging noise could be something between brake pads and rotor, but the grinding that comes and goes in reference to direction sounds like a bearing or joint. I would take it to a professional right away and ask for an estimate only, and then get other estimates from other shops as well. Good luck to you.

Clunk noise when turning right

Could be the drive axle, but may also be a shifting lower control arm or strut. Usually a faulty drive axle clunks every time the axle turns.

Grinding noise when I pull off and clunking noise on bumps

Front hub bearing. If you were the one who replaced the pads you should have turned the hub while the caliper was off and checked for roughness or wobble. Imagine the rotor wandering from side to side and rubbing the pads; thats what a worn hub will do.
