sounds like the downshift cable is out of adjustment, or stretched out. the downshift cable goes to the transmission. CARL,
SOURCE: Would a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo engine fit...
The actual engine assembly will fit but you need to determine if there were any changes made between the two years in the computer or wiring harness. Also make sure that both engines have the exact same transmissions as sometimes the bellhousing patterns are different.
I'm pretty sure yours is a direct replacement though, providing both engines are the same displacement..Most scrapyards have an interchange manual that may help you. (they have to know these things...it's their business)
SOURCE: how do i set the timing on a 2002 jeep grand
Your timing is locked. (distributor is installed with no adjustment feature... on 02's you may not even have a distributor as it's replaced by the cam sensor) All timing and fuel mixture is controlled by the engine computer. Main inputs to the computer that influence changes are the throttle position sensor and MAP sensor but all sensor inputs are evaluated.
