There is a "sludge" in my fuel line, it was cleaned out and the car was drivable. Soon after I was having trouble starting my vehicle. I suspect that the starter is no longer working, but I also think that someone may have put something in my gas tank. I have read that sugar does not normally cause this much damage. Does anyone know what could and what I should do about it?

You did not mention if it is diesel or petrol. If it is diesel then the sludge will be a moss contamination the grows in the fuel when there is water present. It is black to motley grey and is a bit slimy. It occurs when the fuel tank is not filled completely after use and the hot fuel from the injectors cools down creating moisture (condensation) in the tank. IT can be cured with a liberal dose of diesel fuel conditioner but you will have to change the filters a couple of more times . IF it is petrol the amount of sugar used would be so much that nobody could afford to do it. so check for some other problem . Dirty fuel from a lower quality servo will be more likely the answer to the sludge and there are fuel conditioners that will help here.. There is no connection to fuel and starter problems so check the battery by having a load test done on it to check for failing cells. Starter motors either work but do not have enough power to turn the engine over (battery-dirty terminals) or do not work (starter motor --relays --wire connection fuses). Change the fuel filter weekly if necessary and moniter the amount of contaminant getting stopped by the filter. Flush out the tank in it doesn't get less. By a lockable fuel cap to prevent further problems.

I have the exact same problem with my 2006 chevy cobalt right now. That's why I am searching this. I had a mechanic friend look at it and it's the fuel pump and the lines are cracked to. Has anyone heard of a recall on this? It can't be a coincidence that we are having the same issue.

If your Ignition switch is hard to turn ...... Believe it or not, check the transmission assembly for debris... I had a small piece of wire caught up and when I threw the shifter to 'PARK' it wasn't going far enough to release the ignition key!

2000 vw beetle crankes up reeves up nice let off gas dies immediatlly. 1.8 liter turbo

Steve,

Try disconnecting your MAF sensor and then start the car...If it keeps running, then your MAF is bad and needs to be replaced. By unplugging the MAF the engine's computer will default to a preset value and keep the engine running. Also check this next one I found on the internet....go to Google and type in your problem and vehicle info...you'll fins alot of info. Good luck !This problem haunted my beetle forever. Everyone and his brother had a recommendation. I changed the fuel pump, filters, fuel pressure regulator, the MAF sensor, engine speed sensor, replaced the factory airbox with a K&N, kept stalling. Turns out the problem was something that not a single mechanic thought of, and that no diagnostic tool hooked up to your computer would find: sludge in the gas tank. Over time, the lining in the gas tank wears, creating a sludge. This is usually not a problem until you run below a certain level. For me, this is when the gas gauge goes below half. The solution would be to have the entire fuel system cleaned, which I did, but you have to get the tank pumped and cleaned too. Otherwise, the sludge remains. The temporary fix is to never let it go below half. I hope that helps!

Stored 2 years... wont start. What should i check?

Sounds like you have spark and no fuel.
Could be bad gas, sludge in the fuel line or injectors, or a failed fuel pump.
If you check fuel pressure with a gauge and it is normal, you may need to drain the tank and clean out the injectors.
Gasoline turns to shellac after several months, which acts like varnish.

Ran it out of gas, now runs fine cold, as soon as its warm starts hard, and stalls when put in drive

Is the \'Service Engine Soon\' light on? Only from what you described, it sounds like the engine\'s running in \'open loop\' (fast idle, cold) okay, then when it\'s supposed to go into \'closed loop\', you have a malfunction. Checking the trouble codes will pinpoint the problem; your truck is pre-\'95 so it\'s the older OBD-I and you could get the trouble codes by grounding the proper terminal in the ALDL, counting the blinks of the SES light and using it to determine what electronic control device is malfunctioning. If no SES light/trouble codes and since you ran out of gas (?), it might be time to replace the fuel filter and possibly check the fuel pressure and/or fuel pump.

Neon 2000 plymouth _my problem motor surges while idling

fuel line has a sludge blockage, check the line for dents you will have to get the line replaced if there are any dents that could be the problem - if there is a fuel line filter remove it blow out the line with compressed air, there may also be sludge in the gas tank this is best cleaned out by a mechanic who has the time and patience and knows what he is doing. Its a sign your gas tank is slowly corroding and will soon have to be replaced...

Try this - CLEAN your battery cables both top & BOTTOM. Everybody cleans the tops but ignores the bottom ends which are exposed to grease, grime road sludge. What makes me suspect of cables - when cold cables contract and make good contact. As soon as they heat up, they expand and any grease or dirt adds resistance.

Trouble starting, sputtering clogged sound

is you tank the metal type if so you need to remove it and flush it out. and clean the fuel lines change the filter and clean the carb out. i only say is it metal tank as some people have upgraded the tank to plastic. also converted the engine to unleaded fuels. the lead replacement that can be left in the tank so you can use unleaded fuel is ok but you do need to clean the tank out from time to time due to oxidation on the lead, it creates a green sludge in the tank and can be dragged in to the fuel lines and get past the filter if the filter is damaged this will cause similar problems you mention.
