Valve job for 2000 VW Jetta GL w/105,000 miles

My mechanic tells me my 2000 VW Jetta GL needs a valve job. He's quoting me $2K, including replacing timing belt and water pump. Is this right? My car goes through oil like no tomorrow and oil gets into the sparks. I'm not seeing blue smoke (yet) from the exhaust.

Is he sure it isn't the rings are worn also?  If so don't waste money on a valve job, when you really need a rebuilt motor.  Had you changed the oil more you wouldn't need this repair at this time.  Good uck as his price is decent.  Ask him the price for a long block?

I recently bought a 2003 Santa Fe. It's burning a quart of oil every 1,000 miles.

Hi,
If you do some more research you'll see that 1 Qt per 1K miles is considered acceptable, as the dealer stated....not that I agree either!

You may try replacing the PCV valve and ensuring the valves are adjusted properly.

Also, try a different oil - maybe a different weight may help.

I WOULD replace the O2 sensor as it can affect the amount of fuel that is used and may actually dilute the oil if it's getting past the rings.

Just to ensure the engine is healthy you can get a Compression and Leakdown test down. This will tell you the 'health' of the engine.

Go look on the Hyundai/Kia forums for oil consumption, too. You might come across something specific to your model.

My mechanic is telling me my dodge dakota needs a valve job, does anyone know how much it would cost for a 2006 dodge dakota?

valve job ,or hydraulic tappets ,because modern vehicles use stelite coated valves and seats and they never wear out of need grinding as a rule unless it has a million miles on the clock and even then i doubt if they would need doing

2001 VW Passat, has 120,000 miles. I'm told the

You didn't tell us in which currency that '2780' was quoted but if US $, that seems unreasonable to me.
Timing belts can cost >$100 but not often and vary in degrees of difficulty to replace; on one of our cars (87 X1/9) it's about a 30 minute job. A Subaru Outback is more like a couple of hours so yours is likely in that range somewhere.
Valve cover and transmission gaskets aren't normally that tough to replace and cost little; check one of the chain auto parts sites to verify that. It only takes a few minutes to run up the potential parts cost and the labor should run well under a $1000 total.
Now you have a second opinion but, get a 3rd one in person.

i wonder if you've got an EGR valve stuck open that is making it vent exhaust gases into the motor at all times rather than only in wider throttle as it should?

I have 2000 , nissan quest SE with 87,000 miles according with the manual I should change the timing bell when I reach 105,000 miles- but some mechanic told me I must change right away I am confused?...

He may know something you don't I change the belts every 35 thousand miles it is cheeper for replaceing the belt than it is to do a valve job. Ask the mechanic why he thinks it should be changed and have him show you the reason why, don't be afraid to ask it's your money your spending so ask.

2000 VW jetta; what is the torque for valve cover and plenum

I briefly looked online and did not see any info direct6ly relating to the torque spec of the cover bolts. I would guess around 15 ft lbs.--not too much--the head is aluminium--best way to go is to walk up to the service counter of the VW dealer and ask him to provide that information. You have the car and they built it!

Vw 2000 jetta tdi (a/t shifting problem)

Your right in as much as it shouldnt need complete over haul but a competent auto trans technician to clear the shift fault. It could be a solenoid or check valve that should be able to be repaired with out the transmission having to be removed.

Desparate help needed with my VW passat wagon

my first suggestion is to go to a car wash and power wash the the engine all the way from top to bottom. remember to let it dry before you start it this will keep the altenator from shorting out. next check the engine throughly for the oil leak around the gaskets. you must note that silicone should never be used with gaskets on the valve covers. if your only 3/4 of a quart low this would indicated that your valve seals are most likely seeping the oil into the cylinders.( this is typical over time the seals become hard and leak, they should be soft and thus prevent leakage of oil. please rate this and post the results. I'm a mechanic and i will give you the best advice cuz that's my job aside from this site.

I need to replace the valve cover gasket on my voltswagon jetta

you probably mean the valve head gasket.

In this case this is serious work and you should contact a local VW dealership or mechanic and have them do this work for you to insure a job well done. If you simply mean your Valve cover, then this is no big deal and can be done by taking out the 4 screws found at the corners of the valve cover and then simply lifting the cover free and replacing it with a new one/tightening the screws back down.

hope this helps :)
