I doubt it.
The EGR valve allows exhaust gas to enter the intake and be re-burned.

SOURCE: will a bad egr sensor cause 2002 ford windstart to run bad in the rain

Before replacing it, disconnect the sensor with the engine off and spray WD-40 on the connection. Then reconnect and try it. You can disconnect the battery for 10 minutes to clear the Code.

2003 hyundai santa fe po401

P0401 means Insufficient Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Flow. The computer has detected that something is wrong with the EGR system. Can be caused by the EGR tube being blocked/restricted, bad EGR valve, EGR valve not opening (no vacuum), or a bad sensor.

Do you have a check engine light? You may have a bad EGR valve or maybe a vacuum leak? Are you smelling any odors, like rotten eggs?

Fuel leaks/vapor smell

just because of the code, that doesn't mean its that try to pull a vacuum from your EGR valve, with it running, if it doesn't die or tries to dies the you dont.have a clogged EGR port, if no change in engine rpm then theres a restriction in the EGR and this.will cause the code, and try an engine compression test to could.also.tell you to.

I have a 1999 ford contour...running horrible...missing...no power...chug chug chug...engine lighrt on..only code it is throwing is for the egr valve...when you have to excelerate up a hill it has no

EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve may be stopped up with carbons. This would account for some loss of power as well as odor if leaking around intake. If I remember correctly, egr tube originates just above catalytic converter on this model. Condition may be early signs of cat failure ( commonly accompanied by "rotten egg" odor). I recommend having emission system checked by certified tech to avoid uneccessary component replacement.

When the egr valve is bad on a 1992 honda accord wagon what happens?

If it's stuck closed, you will feel no ill effects. If it's stuck open, the car will not idle right and be hard to start. If you're getting an egr trouble code from your accord, test the egr valve to make sure it's working; use your finger to push up on the egr valve diaphragm, while the car is idling....car should shake and shut off if the egr valve is good. The one vacuum solenoid that feeds the egr valve, on that generation accord, is known to go bad and cause the egr trouble code. Check that solenoid if the egr valve tests ok.

The check engine light is on, the EGR valve has been replaced, code P0401 appears on diagnostic. The engine is 4 cyl DOHC 2 wd. slight exhaust odor at times in vehicle.

Are you reset the stored codes there? The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve controls an engine's emission of smog-causing nitrous oxides, or NOx. Its job is to route a portion of the exhaust gases back into the intake manifold. That lowers combustion temperature to below 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit - the temperature at which NOx gases form.

EGR flow is controlled by the engine's computer, which opens or closes the valve as needed. The EGR system is, for the most part, in the "out of sight, out of mind" category, and typical doesn't require regular maintenance. But if it gets clogged with carbon deposits, you'll see your "check engine" light come on, and a code (perhaps P0401 or P0402 or P0403) will show that there is insufficient flow. That typically results from a vehicle being driven persistently on short trips that don't allow the engine to fully warm up. Flow problems also can be caused by carbon buildup due to failure to change the oil frequently enough.

A clogged EGR valve not only results in higher emissions, it can affect fuel economy and cause rough idling - even serious engine damage. Valves can usually be cleaned, but replacement is often recommended.

About thie generic fault code, I suggtes check this description and tips for solution information: DTC-P0401-Tests (keep in midn that this code applied for alot brands, Hyundai included).

Josh, your catalytic converter is shot (plugged). This caused a back-up of exhaust into the egr system. Probably melted the flexible tubing to the sensor, and may have damaged the sensor and/or the egr valve itself. The hissing you heard was the exhaust venting from the egr system. The converter being plugged caused you to lose power until the exhaust found a way out of the engine via the egr system...

1994 saturn sl 2 oxygen sensor light came on replaced it. now the code is saying the upstream oxygen sensor input volage above normal operating range???? and theres a bad odor coming from car???

It could be the oxygen sensors but when you said there is a bad odor I would bet that you have a bad EGR valve. It will send a code for the oxygen sensor if there is problems with the EGR valve. A lot of the time the smell is like rotten eggs when you have a bad EGR.
