Check engine light comes and goes, usually only hear the rattling noise at idle speed... due to increased vibration from the car when sitting still, with the brake on, when you let up on the brake, the vibration subsides, and the rattling goes away.
It could be a heat sheild on the exsaust its not a real problem, but if bothers you that much you could tighten the bolts or even take it off. and about your check engin light it could be your gas cap not being tightened enough because on subaru cars the gas caps must click atlease 4 times or a check engin light will show up due to a code sent to the computer saying the gad cap is loose

did you buy it privately or a dealer w/ a warrantee? If you have a warantee, use it.If not start by changing the oil& see if that gives you any results.use the proper oil for Subaru, not a Quick Lube.

Drop in to an Autozone, or Pep Boys, or similar big parts store & they will usually scan for codes free. This will hopefully eliminate all the guess work, or at least point everyone in right direction for better diagnosis. If not obvious from codes what the problem is, get back to us and we'll help you out.
Testimonial: "Thanks for the great suggestion . I'll have Autozone read the codes on Monday. Thanks again!"

I was looking to replace my headlights when I found what the rattling noise was.... the battery hold down clamp had "popped" loose, and was dangling, causing the metal on metal rattling noise I was hearing.
