Could be the anti-theft security or the neutral safety switch if it is an automatic trans.
Can you crank it in neutral ?

If your car won't start, try this procedure:

  • Check the battery cable connections:
Make sure the positive cable, makes a good connection at the battery and at the starter. Make sure the negative cable makes a good ground connection at the battery and (preferably) at the engine.
  • Check the battery the simple way, like this:
Turn on the headlights, then try to start the car.If the headlights do not dim or go out, then the battery is likely ok.
  • Check the starter and solenoid:
If the wiring looks ok, then look at the starter solenoid for a good connection, and proper voltage at the starter(10 volts minimum while cranking).
If the starter spins and no crank, the problem is most likely the Solenoid's bendix gear is stuck.
Have someone hit (not too hard) the starter while you try to start the car. This usually works by dislodging a stuck bendix gear.
  • Make a simple test of the alternator:
If you can, somehow get the engine running, measure the voltage at the battery. It should be at least 13.6 volts to properly charge the battery.

SOURCE: I REPLACED THE STEERING COLUMN

If you do not have a pass key any more, then you will need to dissable the antitheft (pass key module) in order for the engine to turn over. From what I gather you have replaced the column with an older version, which will not allow any comm. with the module. The pass key module enables the starter circuit. See diagram.

First of all make sure all your battery connections are Clean and Tight. If they are and all your dash lights come on and its not starting But its cranking over Your anti theft alarm may have gotten activated. You may have to leave your Key in the On position for 20 minutes to reset the alarm. Not cranking just in the on position, Now if its not Cranking and your hearing a clicking sound it may be your starter. I have sometimes tapped on the stater with a deadblow hammer and had someone crank it over Making sure your in park foot on brake and being EXTREMLY Carefull that you are not going to run someone over. If that don't get you going Get back to me we can do some more trouble shooting. Get that thing going for you. Thanks, Bear001

SOURCE: no power to starter 2004 chevy tahoe

Hi
It could be your neutral safety switch. It could be the starter relay which is located in the fuse panel box. It could be the smaller wire going to the starter could be loose or corroded.

SOURCE: When the ignition key is turned a clicking noise is heard.

Sounds like a bad ground. If the battery voltage does not drop when the starter is engaged, the starter is not getting the juice. Check the ground connection again. 90%

I replaced my ignition now my 2006 chevy equinox wont start?

There could be a lot of things going on here, need more information...
If the motor wont turn over when you turn ther key, is there enough power? Charge battery, check charging system.
If the motor turns over but does not start, could be anything from the electronics, fuel delivery etc.
If it just clicks when you turn the key it could be a starter.
Hope this at least gets you started in the right direction.

83 camaro wont start, got new ignition switch and tumbler.

It's probably time to pull the starter off and have it tested. I think places like autozone or advance will check it free. Before you do that, make sure all connections are clean and tight.

1990 fleetwood starting prob.turn key nothing i can hear fuel pump the relays click i can jump starter. but nothing changed starter it was on its way out checked all fuses cheked all fuse links cheked key...

I would check the ignition switch. With a test light, check the small wire going to the solenoid for power when someone turns the key to the starting position. If you aren't getting power to that terminal on the starter, the ignition switch is not sending power to the solenoid.

94 z wont start

You will have to check, at the starter, for power to the SMALL wire on the starter solenoid (which is on the starter) when turning the ignition switch to start.
If there is power to this wire ( usually purple ) and power at the LARGE cable ( from the battery ) at the starter end.....you need a starter.

If you do not have power at the small wire at the solenoid with the key in start position and battery power is OK.....check the safety neutral switch.Moving the shifter around a little can sometimes allow the car to start if the neutral switch is worn.

A new battery does not always mean a fully charged battery.
Try a boost from another car before testing the starter for power.

The battery cables need to be clean and tight....and check the ground to the engine as well.

Everything else may work OK with bad connections, they don't use the power the starter needs to turn the engine over.

I have a 91 camaro rs i put a starter in it it wont start. the guy i got it from made a new key at a chevy dealer i think why wont it do anything. ty john

If the key turns, that's all it needs to do. Check, with a test light, to see if you have power to the starter. It could be a dirty loose battery cable, or a faulty cable, or a fuseable link in the positie cable that is gone. It could be the ignition switch itself. Not the key and tumbler, the switch on the steering column. You'll have to do some checking.
