Yes a stopped up catalytic converter can make it run hotter . Something else to look at is air in top of motor, Some cars have a bleeder valve to let air out . If not loosen the highest holes clamp to let air seep out , if coolant comes out look at other things such as timing ,stopped up radiator, to much fuel.
No it wont pass, you have a post catalytic 02 sensor this is nicknamed catalytic monitor so it will code up, and you will get a check engine light, drilling a hole the threshold will go below value, so dont do it, Now you can do this take the catalytic out let it soak in water and laundry soap.rinse and install dry.Its worth a try.
Diagnostic code produces P0420 catalyst system efficiency below threshold-Bank 1. Probable causes are listed as follows: 1-air leak in exhaust before rear 02 sensor, 3-Fuel system fault, 4-faulty catalytic converter.
If you take it to a muffler shop, like Meineke, they should be able to give you a free inspection and quote. It will PROBABLY be as simple as welding up a small hole in either the catalytic converter or the muffler.
Try checking the crank sensor, (for sludge, and wiring connection) and having someone check the timing. It may have jumped a tooth. (so the engine isnt firing the sparkplugs at the right time) Also try drilling a 1/4" to 1/2" hole in the exhaust, forward of the catalytic converter, then try to start it. If it starts with the hole drilled, then that means that the catalytic converter is clogged, and needs to be replaced. If there is no difference, then the small hole can be plugged with a short bolt, or welded shut.
what if i dont replace it?
and how hard is it to replace it?
Is there any welding?
