1998 Ford Ranger XLT 4x4 w/automatic transmission. Reverse gear suddenly not functioning!! Been in a severe deep freeze here on east coast.I don't know where to start to diagnose issue.

Since this vehicle is approaching 20 years old there may be issues that are not related to the cold weather. Since no one appears to have yet answered your problem I can comment on the cold weather and its effects on fluids. You may need to check your water thermostat as the trans lines go to the radiator and the thermostat affects the radiator temperature. Also, old fluid may not flow as well as clean trans fluid does, the valve body in the trans may be sticking or getting insufficient pressure do to an obstruction. New fluid and a new trans filter may help on these units.

I do not know when the shift mechanisms changed to solenoid gang switches. In these types of trans some allowed for a change of a single shift solenoid without removing the trans from the truck. These used electric shift instead of using valve bodies. The connecting wires were subject to corrosion and WD40 may help.

Do not know your resources to work on this problem. A simple fluid change can be done in a quick change place. Replacing an electric solenoid takes more time but is easier done under a standing lift. Hope this helps.

1995 Fleetwood will not move in reverse

You don't say how many miles its done but there is a clutch within the trans for reverse. If other contributors don't say to look at something electrical this may be the problem. Is the trans fluid level correct? If it is then a trans shop could test the box. Sometimes the trans pan can be removed, an adjustment made to the clutches and refilled. A good trans shop or a knowledgeable DIY neighbour plus a manual to look at may help.

Shift erratic goes on and off from gears like electrical problem

It sounds like trans problem but a throttle position sensor would be the part that you are gingerly feathering to get results. This is a part attached to the side of the metal air horn and you can use a Websearch to see how to replace that part. Find out if the parts store would let you return that electrical part if it does not immediately fix your problem. It is a start and is a lower priced part if you did not need it,

Some of the electric shift problems can be from plug-ins that connect the wires to the transmission, or internal trans problems. Check trans fluid levels. If high mileage clean fluid and filter change in trans would possibly help.

There are some designs in electric controls that even a burned out light bulb in the dash can change the electric values that affect shifting in a 4 wheel drive.

Automatic transmission trouble

With so little info, you can only guess. Most computer controled transmission default to either second or third gear if there is an electrical problem.

The mitubishi trans has sensors on the trans that if they are hooked up wrong, it wont shift. If the fluid is full and clean, odds are you have an electrical problem. Could even be a fuse or the computer.

Hope this helps.

Transmission Not Going into Overdrive

First check and make sure the fluid is full. The most likely cause is a failed solenoid pack. Circuit codes normally mean something electrical not mechanical has failed. The solenoid pack is on the outside of trans pretty easy to replace.

2002 neon trans pressure swithc code P08884

you might just need a new sensor im not sure of the exact location of it though but i do know on most dodge vehicles and definatly neons that whenever a trans code is comming up the car will go into a "saftey mode'' where the car wont get full power, this is to basically baby the engine and trans untill you get it to a mechanic. I would recomend when taking it to the dealer to have it looked at put the car in third gear instead of drive and take it easy on the gas

Transmission will not shift out of 1st gear

Im not sure what the code 37 definition is,as im not at work with access to code definitions, however, that trans in your truck is a variant of some type,of the A 518 model,4 speed overdrive. The year model,1994,that trans could be either a 48 RH or 48 RE.RH stands for RWD Hydraulic, and RE is RWD Electric .On the driver side of the trans, you should see a connector going straight down into the trans. If that connectror is a big,round,8 wire connector, then the trans is the RE,or Electronic model. If the connector is a small,oval,2 wire connector, then the trans is an RH or Hydraulic model. The RE/ Electric model has a governor pressure sensor and solenoid mounted on the valvebody, and are very problematic, and most times replacing with new solves the problem. When they act up,you get NO upshifts. If the trans is the RH or Hydraulic trans, then it has a mechanical governor controlling upshifts, and that would be an internal trans problem.Good luck.
