This sounds like the carburetor is dirty internaly and needs a rebuild to correct the problem.if it was the fuel pump it would not matter if you held the pedal wide open or not it would not pump gas.you mention plug wires but not mention spark plugs specifically.these are the items that are normally replaced when a tune-up is done.plugs, cap rotor, points, condensor, plug wires if needed, air filter, fuel filter, set point gap,set ignition timing, adjust carb mixture.

SOURCE: removing gas pedal from 65 mustang

Wd-40 it for couple hours. You need to hold other end that is most likely stripped. Needle nose vise grip worked for me.:)

Fuel pump replace

I jjust did this so go to parts store after removing old fuel pump to show the counter salesperson. There are two bolts that hold fuel pump to the side of the block on front right side facing the truck. Remove gas line first from pump, the the 2 bolts that hold it to the block . repeat sequence on installation and put some(1/8 cup), gasoline down the carbuerator.then thry to start. repeat if truck fails to start. Or try using starting fluid in an aeresol can. just a few squirts should work. good luck Herb

It doesnt seem to be getting enough fuel. When i drive I will have the gas pedal all the way down to the floor it may start to move may not. If i put it into neutral it will eventually start to get enough...

1. Disconnect the Neg battery cable
2. Replace the fuel filter
3. trace the fuel line from the gas tank until you find the filter
4. remove the filter and make sure U replace it with a new and all the specs match(psi must meet vehicle standards)
5. installation is the reverse of these steps
6. purge the fuel system of air bubbles
7. start vehicle with a see thru plastic container loose fuel line from the carbuerator and drain into plastic container until you get a steady stream clamp off the hose and reattach to carbuerator

I have an issue with a 87 toyota pick up carburetor. Sometimes it doesnt want to start and sometimes it does a friend told me its that diaphram on the front of the carb with the 3 bolts but he could not...

Okay, your freind may be right, that part is called the accelerator pump, it is used for starting the truck, when you pump the gas to start it this pumps a few squirts of gas into the carb. what concerns me is that you hold the gas pedal to the floor to start it, most of the time an internal leaking carb floods the engine and holding the pedal down will let it start, a quick test would be to use a carb cleaner spray and before trying to start the truck hit the gas pedal and see if inside from the top of the carb look and see if you see a squirt of gas spray out, you will need some one to push the gas pedal or you can do it at the carb, if it squirts gas then the accelerator pump may be good and carb may be leaking and need rebuilding but if it doesnt squirt then its bad and then i want you to spray the carb cleaner into the carb and try to start the truck and if its due to the accel pump then after you spray into carb the truck should fire up and run without having to hold the pedal to the floor, if thats the case then replace accel pump if it still doesnt fire until you hold gas down then crab needs rebuilding . good day. hope this is helpful.

We changed the fuel pump out because the car stopped running we checked it out and it was bad, the new one works and we have fuel to the out port of the filter but it will not start .we have spark but...

Not sure about this, but you might want to find your fuel "reset" button for the fuel pump. It's usually located in the trunk.

You say that it's getting fuel to AND from the filter (?); there might not be enough pressure to get to the injectors.

Try turning the key on for a about 5 seconds, but don't try to start it. This actuates the fuel pump.. Do no pump the gas pedal. Turn the key off, then try to start it.

If it doesnt start, turn the key on but don't try to start it. Pump the gas pedal 2-3 times, then try to start. You usually should not pump the pedal, but in this case it might just need a little "kicker" to get gas through the line.

If it doesn't start repeat this procedure. Hopefully it starts.

Note: Never crank a car over for more than 4-5 seconds. It's hard on the starter and will wear your battery down really fast.

Have a 97 Grand Voyager i just bought yesterday. Started and ran perfectly fine. I got up this morning and now it won't start. Starter turns just fine and fuel pump does come on.

You would need to check the fuel pressure but try turning the key on and off a few times, this will prime the fuel system, if the fuelpump has a bad check valve it will drain the fuel down and then it will take a few trys to start, but if you tried starting it a few times then thats not the problem. you hear the pump but this doesnt mean its putting out enough pressure, try holding the gas pedal down and trying to start it and see, maybe its flooded. good luck.

I have a 1995 Buick Regal with a 3.8 V6. Car will start just fine on a cold start but will not continue to run unless you hold the engine on at least 3000 rpms for about 30 seconds. it will then idle just...

i think you might be right it sounds like your engine is getting over fed fuel you are probably not getting very good fuel mileage either the 3.8 and 5.0 would defintely require the same volume of fuel it is probably playing havoc on the pressure regulators i would get another fuel pump and start there

On my 1993 ford mustang Lx 4 cyl,if I drive car turn-off and after 25 minutes try to start car will crank ,but won't start and if I don't hold ignition key until it start it won't start unless I hold down...

It can be anything - throttle adjustment, burnt out spark plugs, clogged fuel filter(honestly not common and really just a reason to replace it xD), or a worn out fuel pump.
First check the throttle/idle setting if it's fine, then the wires leading to the throttle body and air sensors, also the wires leading to the fuel pump.
also check if there isn't too much oil in the air filter's box or anywhere the engine vent's hoses lead.
