2002 Toyota Echo Check Engine light (malfunction indicator lamp) came on while driving. Gas tank cap was on tight (a loose cap could trigger the light). Fluid levels are proper. I realize this light could indicate a myriad of problems but I was wondering if there was a common problem for my particular model.

I have the same exact problem with my 2002 Echo. Just a couple of weeks ago the engine light came on even though everything seems just fine. I took the car for an oil change the day after the light came on and the guys put a scanner on it and determined that the problem was with the gas cap. One of the guys tightened it a lot and the light went off for a couple of weeks. But, a couple of days ago it came back, so I bought a new gas cap from Canadian Tire, however, the engine light is still on. Perhaps there's something special about the Toyota cap...luckily I kept it. I'll put it back on and tighten it a lot and hopefully that will get the light to go off. Then, perhaps that will reset the sensor and I'll be able to put the new cap on without the light coming back on.

You should get the problem code ran at a shop or auto parts store. My moms 2003 Toyota Echo check engine light came on and it had a slight misfire, I replaced all the sparkplugs about $20 and no check light.

Hope this was helpful

The cluster panel what side is the check engine light on 2001 Nissan frontier Exie

when you turn on your ignition to the point before engaging the starter all your warning lights should light up. The Engine Check Light is very obvious, except they throw convention to the wind and show it as 'Service Engine Soon' lamp 'Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL)'.
Page 63 - Section 2-7 Instruments and controls

Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) If this indicator lamp comes on steady or blinks while the engine is running, it may indicate a potential emission control malfunction. The malfunction indicator lamp may also come on steady if the fuel filler cap is loose or missing, or if the vehicle runs out of fuel. Check to make sure the fuel filler cap is installed and closed tightly, and that the vehicle has at least three gallons of fuel in the fuel tank. After a few driving trips, the lamp should turn off if no other potential emission control system malfunction exists.

Blinking check engine light

Blinking of Check Engine Light may be due to:
- Misfire (Ignition system malfunction).
- Evaporative system malfunction (Gas cap, fuel tank leakage, canister, vacuum leaks).
- Catalytic converter.
- Wiring and connectors.
It is better to have the car be diagnosed properly with a suitable diagnostic tool and to retrieve the error codes and freeze frame data to locate the problem.

2003 toyota echo p0442. I have replaced the Gas cap. Check engine light came back on.

P0442 Evaporative Emission System Leak Detected (small leak)
not

P0457 which is the gas cap is loose or off.

This means that there may be a leak in the hoses that lead from the gas tank to the charcoal canister, if so equipped.

Good luck on finding the leak and repairing.

VSC and Malfunction Indicator came on and stays on

When you say malfunction indicator , do you mean `check engine`` light.
These paired lights can indicate a change in engine air flow and fuel mixture. Try a fresh tank of premium fuel, but first a unscrew and re-screw the gas cap until it ratchets into place. The lights can be triggered by a loose gas cap, a fouled O2 sensor, and several other emission related problems including sticking throttle body components, etc.
This can sometimes be sprayed with carb cleaner inserted in the snorkle area of the air intake where teh snorkle meets the metal intake.

Check engine light comes on if gas cap is loose (according to the dealer) - not really wanting to go back to the dealer repeatedly for a quick fix to turn off the light, but not wanting to ignore the check...

replace the gas cap .. clean the gas filler pipe where it seals against the gas cap .. .. even a small crack in the rubber seal will trigger the check engine light ..
