I lost first gear in automatic ****** in 2005 nissan frontier and check engine light came. what do i do?

Your Frontier has 2 possible engine sizes, the 2.5L and 4.0. Both diagrams appear below.

Sounds like coolant isn't circulating. While moving engine making pump circulate coolant and fresh air hitting front of radiator. At idle or a stop, engine not making pump run as fast and there is no fresh air hiiting radiator ( especially if fan isn't working properly) Check out water pump and cooling fan.

Go to a different dealer. The dealer should know what is wrong with the vehicle by the codes. Don't let them keep guessing what is wrong and having you replace random parts.

If it's an automatic, You see the Following: P R N D 2 1 etc. Some may show: P R N D 3 2 1 or .... 3 2 L ... D 2 L etc.

To really determine whether it's a 4,5 or 6, take into consideration if it has Overdrive.

Count however many gears are on the column, as listed above, plus overdrive. this will give you your answer.

Ex: With Overdrive: P R N D 3 2 would be a 3 speed ( 2 3 D) with overdrive.

The injection pump is not well calibrate,you need to pass the injection pump through an injection calibration tester.

check if linkage is touching bare wires

Is the car automatic or manual, if Auto have the gearbox oil level checked. If Manual try putting it in reverse when the engine is off - could be sync rings in the gearbox or clutch
