Headlights wont stop going up and down what is causing this?

check the headlight relays ,
Check for possible faulty light stalk switch also. Dash lights may fail with this possible cause.
Check fuses

Headlights get power straight from the battery via the starter. Remove the wire harness from the headlight switch and use a test light to see if you have power at the large red wire. I'm thinking you don't which means the fusible link down by the starter is bad.
Two of the wires on the solenoid have a rubber plug on them about 6" from the solenoid. Those are the fusible links. One shuts down power to most of the car including the headlight switch and the other shuts down the ingnition system. I forget which is which. Anytime I had one go bad I replaced both, just in case. All you have to do is cut out the rubber plug and splice the two wires together and you are good to go. Just be sure you wrap them up good, heat shrink tube and electrical tape, to keep out water and road grime.

There may be a switch on your dash that allows you to set the headlights to do exactly what you describe so they won't get trapped down by ice/snow in winter. Check to see that this switch is set so the headlights go down when you turn the lights off. If the switch is set correctly, check to make sure that the switch is not faulty.

The gear in headlight assembly is cheap plastic from the factory and is no good. A seller on E-bay has the assembly with machined brass gears that wont fail you no time soon!

Manually open the headlight doors. There should be a knob on top of the motors, possibly under a rubber boot to turn manually to raise the headlights (safety feature). If they go down when the lights are turned off, listen for the relay click. I don't remember where it is located so you have to listen for the click to find it. The up relay should be in the same area so swap the two to see if they go up and not down, then replace the faulty one. If all else fails, leave them in the up position.

Check the sensors that tell the relay to shut off when the lights close down all the way. This is a fairly common problem especially if this has never been replaced before.

Either it's your DIMMER SWITCH,or,a defective headlight,or,you could have a short,or,not grounded properly,or,a dirty or rusted socket connection.

This problem is usually associated with the headlight switch. make sure wire plugs are tight and secure or you may need to replace the switch

Alright well I can help you out a little. This just happened today on my 1986 Porsche 944 Turbo so I haven't had the chance to completely solve the problem. I got them to go back down but then can't get them to go down by using the button. To get them to go back down.  1. Pop the hood.  2. Find the headlights motor. There is only one. It is located on the left hand side of the engine bay. If you are standing in front of the car. It is close to the front of the engine bay.  3. Once you have found the headlights motor take the rubber cover off of it. (if there is one. there is on my car)  4. There is a knob on the top of the headlights motor. Twist it as if to tighten it slightly. That should cause the motor to react and make them go down. It's kinda startling if you happened to stumble upon it like I did. lol.  Other than that I haven't figured out anymore. I will though. My best guess would be a problem with the switch. The motor obviously works if they go up. Its just something electrical thats not communicating to the motor that you want the headlights to go down. In my case at least. Hopefully I helped.
