Alternate Method
1. Turn the ignition key to ON with the engine off.
2. Fully press and release the accelerator pedal 3 times within 5 seconds. Several beeps sound. This confirms the oil life system has been reset.
3. Turn the ignition key OFF.
4. If the CHANGE/OIL message comes back on when you start the engine, the engine oil life system has not reset. Repeat the procedure
I use the second method, it is more universal and it works for Chevy Venture too.

there is no light for emissions testing on this vehicle. there is a ses light that can come on, indicationg a problem with the engine or transmission electronic system. this will require a scan tool to pull trouble codes. there is another light called oil life monitoring that needs to be reset after oil changes, which I suspect is what you are seeing. here is a picture of the light and the instructions for resetting.,

The Engine Oil Life System calculates when to change your engine oil and filter based on vehicle use. Anytime your oil is changed, reset the system so it can calculate when the next oil change is required. If a situation occurs where you change your oil prior to a CHANGE OIL SOON message being turned on, reset the system.
After changing the engine oil, the system must be reset as follows:

1. Turn the ignition to RUN, with the engine OFF.
2. Press the information and reset buttons on the Driver Information Center (DIC) at the same time to enter the personalization menu.

If the CHANGE ENGINE OIL message comes back on when you start the vehicle, the Engine Oil Life System has not reset. Repeat the reset procedure.

The "Change Oil" message displayed on your Chevrolet Silverado's gauge cluster is part of the Oil Life Monitoring System, standard on many GM (General Motors) vehicles. The message appears when it's time for an oil-change; the interval is based on your driving habits (for example, it may appear more frequently if you engage in a lot of stop-and-go traffic). 2007 to 2010 Chevrolet Silverado
1. Step 1 Insert your key and turn the ignition to position "C" (Run/On) without starting the engine.
   
2. Step 2 Press the second button from the top on your information center (next to the steering column, car symbol) until "Oil Life" displays on your odometer cluster.
   
3. Step 3 Press and hold the "Reset" button on your information center (check mark symbol) until the "Oil Life" display changes to 100 percent.
   
4. Step 4 Turn your ignition to position "A" (Lock/Off).
   
2002 to 2006 Chevrolet Silverado
5. Step 1 Insert your key into the ignition, and turn it to position "A" (Run/On) without cranking the engine.
   
6. Step 2 Depress the gas pedal three times within five seconds. The "Change Oil" message will begin to flash.
   
7. Step 3 Turn the ignition to position "A" (Lock/Off) once the light stops flashing (about 10 seconds).

There is apparently another way also, where you turn on the ignition without starting, and pump the gas pedal three times with 7 sec or something like that.

How does it work? The oil life monitor is a pretty sophisticated algorithm.

if you have a owners manual read it. try coloradofans.com website and search the forums. i think johnny5846 is right if you don't have a DIC (driver info center). i believe you use the DIC(tripodometer). i don't know the sequence off hand, you can also you can change your lock settings and alarm settings, etc. with the DIC.
