My 2003 ford escape 6 cylinder has a rough idle at start, almost like when a vehicle runs out of gas and it also does it on inclines. Ive already changed the fuel filter. Thought it may be the IAC valve.

First, is the check engine light on ? If it is you would have it scanned for trouble codes to hopefully get some clues.
A rough idle is usually caused by cylinders not firing or not producing power. And the check engine light should be on if that is happening.
A faulty cat would only cause the engine to load up. The EGR could cause a rough idle due to a vac leak but again it should cause the warning light to come on.
You could have something going on in the gas tank. 2003 was the last year Ford used a fuel filter outside the gas tank, so something could have clogged up the injectors.

It can be issue with IAC( idle air control valve) causing the problem.

Remove the intake manifold, if necessary & change
the other 3 plugs & coils,assuming a V6, if not then the
codes were wrong & you did the wrong coils

No code tells you what to replace,only component testing does


Most likely been in there for 10 years

Replace the front O2 Sensors--their only good to 100,000 miles
Leave the rear monitors in converter outlet

Don't waste your money on putting something in the fuel tank
That is never a repair & is diluted 12 or 16 oz to 15 gallons
of fuel That alone tells you it is useless

Probably pay the replace the EGR Valve if not done already

They don't last a few years on a ford

check for vacuum leaks and check your purge valve

there can be many causes for lack of power many autoparts stores such as autozone can read codes stored in your vehicles memory which would help to narrow the possibilities. I expect it to have a P03xx code the xx being the cylinder that is misfiring which could possibly lead to a bad coil.

If your Escape is v-6 powered a common problem believe it or not is a solenoid in the transmission that allows the torque converter to "unlock" at idle. If the solenoid is bad then the torque converter stays locked and puts a load on the engine causing rough idle in gear at stop.

what do you mean by "as if the idle is too low",  does the car start normally but then idle at less than 750 rpms? or idle rough? If either of these is the case it could be bad gas, fuel injectors or fuel pump. As far as the odor, do you every see any fluid if you look under the car? A punctured fuel line would be rare but would fit all your symptoms. hope this helps :)
