Monitor blacks out
Sounds like your video adapter settings have been wedged. If you are running Windows XP Service Pack 2, you can use the following steps.
1) Boot the laptop into safe mode. Boot into safe mode with networking support if possible. This can be done by tapping the F8 key as the computer first turns on.
2) Once you are at the Desktop, right click on My Computer and select Manage.
3) In the window that appears, select Device Manager from the menu on the left.
4) Find Display Adapters on the right and click the plus sign. This will list the video adapter that you have.
NOTE: WRITE this down EXACTLY. You may need to go and get drivers for this. Seeing this is an older model, I doubt you'll need it, but better to be safe then sorry.
5) Go to your manufacturers support web site and download these drivers. You may not need them, but better to be safe then sorry.

NOTE: Skip step 5 if you did not boot with network support or cannot get to the Internet. This can be done from normal mode.
6) Right click on the display adpater and choose un-install. Hit OK on the window that appears and reboot the machine when the process is done.
7) The machine will take longer than usual to boot, as Windows XP is re-discovering the video adapter and resetting everything to the defaults. When it is done booting, the screen may look weird since the settings are now the defaults. You can the set them to what you want by right clicking on the desktop and selecting properties. Then go to the settings tab.
8) IF it did not re-discover the video adapter (this can be confirmed through the device manager), then go ahead and install the drivers. Windows Update will most likely also have the drivers.
NOTE: This process should work with Windows 2000 as well, although I was not able to test it. The only issue I can think of is that it may not auto-discover the video adapter, and you would have to manually download and install the drivers.

Getting message: "VGA mode not support"
Shut the computer off, hold the power button for five seconds.
Once it's off, turn it back on and tap the F8 button until you see a black and white safe mode menu. Use your arrow key to select Last Known Good Configuration and then press enter.
This should get you back to your previous settings.
If it doesn't work simply comment back here and let me know how far you got.

Can't switch on monitor screen
You must go into the BIOS of you computer and turn off the sleep mode and also in windows. Disconnect the monitor and power it on without hooking it up to the computer. If the monitor turn on and is working , then hook it up to the computer and try with with the sleep controls off to see if it works correctly. If this works you must check the owners manuals of the motherboard and monitor for the correct operation of the sleep mode functions. Then reinstall the sleep mode operation and see if everything works correctly. If the monitor fails to work. Try the monitor on another computer and see if it will function. If all this fails to get the monitor working , then you will need to have the monitor tested in a service center to find the problem and have it repaired. You should also check your computer on another monitor just to maker sure you don not have a problem with the computer too. Hope this helps you with your problem.
The screen goes all white within 1 to 5 mins. of being turned on. kinda like my ex-girlfriend.
Inside this monitor is a power supply. The power supply converts the AC electricity you have, (120 volts or 220 volts. Depends on what country you're in), to the needed voltage for the monitor.
The power supply is going bad. This is why you can turn it off and back on, and it works for a few minutes.
More than likely it's Electrolytic Capacitors that are going bad, within the power supply itself.
These capacitors break down due to a variety of problems. The largest issue, is that they are cheap components, and have an inherent problem before they were installed.
Capacitor Plague.
Let me explain. A number of years ago a certain individual stole an Electrolytic Capacitor paste formula.
[To simplify the construction of an Electrolytic Capacitor, let me state they are small aluminum 'cans', and have Electrolytic paste inside. (Ones used for computer related capacitors)
For a more detailed explanation of Electrolytic Capacitor construction, I invite you to go to Wikipedia.org, and type -> Electrolytic Capacitor <- in their search bar. Look under the Construction heading]
Unknown to the thief they were given a bogus formula. This formula of Electrolytic paste developed a gas after time. (Hydrogen gas)
This gas expands in the capacitor, breaks a seal, and Electrolytic paste starts oozing out.
For a small amount of paste loss, the capacitor operates in a weakened state.
Such as what you're experiencing.
After so much paste loss, the capacitor fails.
There is more than one capacitor that is used, in that monitor power supply. Some are still good enough to get the monitor to power on, but can't sustain power, so they can't keep the monitor on.
I know this may be way more information than you wanted, or needed, but I thought I would explain exactly what is going on.
Solution? I suggest you replace the monitor. Opening a monitor is VERY dangerous. I Do Not advise trying to fix it.

the monitor has bad backlights or circuitry. Call the company, their number should be in the owners manual. Or, look on the web for their website. Or, call the store where you bought it. The monitor must be taken to a service centre for repair.
