    Hi Darren,

I have dealt with many failed hard drives and I think I can help you. Can you provide a bit more detail with exactly what you are trying to do?

It sounds like you have one (two?) failing internal drive and you wish to copy the data onto another hard drive. How are each of the drives connected? (Have you removed the failed drive from the computer and attached it to another computer via the sata or ide to usb cable?)

It sounds like your dimension 9150 desktop has a primary and secondary drive.now when you say it wont start up what are you referring too?does it not power on at all, do any of the fans or lights come on. and also sounds like you got an external hard drive. now I got confused when you explained when it reads the drive windows says it cant read the drive. My question is I thought the pc would not start up? can you explain little more in detail, so i can try and give you the right advice?

Sata pata ide hard

A sata drive doesn't need jumpers. The jumpers were only required when 2 drives used the same cable.

NEED CABLE WIRING DIAGRAM FROM DRIVES AND HARD DISC. TWO OF EACH.

No diagram needed. All optical and hard disc drives will need to have power and data. If they are IDE, use those cables. SATA get SATA cables. The ports on the system boar will be labeled as SATA 1 and so on. If they are not the correct order when you boot, you can swap the cables or change it in the BIOS.

Hi, My laptop refuses to start, gives an error code. I was thinking of backing up my data from my crashed hard drive and clean this drive using a IDE and SATA to USB 2.0.How do i go about connecting this?

First of all you have to get the hard drive from the laptop (it usually has 2-3 screws). Plug the IDE or SATA controller into it and after that plug it in the USB of another computer. You do not need drivers or something like that. If you can not simply copy the data, use GetDataBack(there are 2 versions, depending on the type of the hard's partitions)

Dell dvd and cd wont read some cd's

Since it can read some disks them something as simple as cleaning the lens and/or the disks would be a great place to start. You can also check your connections inside, be sure the IDE cable is secure. If that dose not fix it I would replace the drive. There cheap and go bad.

Dell Dimension 9150 when format it says there is no drive

This is because your motherboard is using ahci for it's disk drives, which is faster and better than the old style "IDE".

You have two options, either you find the drivers on the internet and create a floppy disk to load the drivers with (this will only work if you have a floppy drive, and I assume you don't). The other alternative is to go in to the bios and find the setting to switch it from AHCI to IDE, it should be under heading with the word "SATA" in it. Once you've done this the XP CD should pick up your hard-drive fine.

To get in the bios you usually press F2 or F12, as soon as you power on your PC continually press F2 until it takes you in to the bios, if it doesnt then power it down and try with F12.

It wont start.. what is sata?

You have to make sure first, what is your HDD type? is it IDE or SATA (Serial ATA).

Check it out: http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-sata-or-serial-ata.htm

You should plug the data cable, to your hard disk. Remember, there's no way to plug your SATA cable to IDE HardDisk because the connector are not the same (I don't know if there's a converter between it).

So, make sure it first. If it IDE, find IDE data Cable, and make sure it plugged to your MainBoard and Hard Disk. Do the same procedure if it is SATA Hard Disk, only this time you should connect the SATA cable from your mainboard to your SATA Hard Disk.

Trying to install hard drive on Dell Dimension 8200.

Sounds like the drive from the 4700 is a SATA drive which uses a different connector than the 40-pin IDE. I couldn't confirm it, but the 8200 may not have SATA connectors for this type of drive. Although the 4700 appears to have both SATA and IDE.

Hard drive

at first you have to check it out, whether your hard drive is related on ide or sata. sata is the new technic used now in the recent years. ide is the old technic that comes with the wide bus cables. but sata is a small red colored cable that transfers data more faster than ide.
after that, you have to check it out the mother board settings for connecting with sata cable. because, the older pc have no more settings for sata. if it is available means, no problem to update your hard drive. or you can just go for external hard drives.
