My dvd rom will read a copied cd but not a burnt one. I don't know why.

What do you mean download cd's and dvd's? You don't download them, you simply put them in the drive and play them. If you purchased a music cd or a movie dvd that you want to play or watch, then just put it in the drive. The system will recognize it and automatically open Windows Media Player for you to play it or you can open it yourself if autoplay is not active.

Exactly what is it that you are trying to do?

If you are talking about putting a blank cd or dvd into the drive to copy music or a movie to it, that's another story and will take a while to explain. You will basically need to make sure your CD/DvD drive can burn CD's or Dvd's. Then you will need some type of burning software (later versions of Window Media Player will burn).

Click Start/My Computer and look at your devices. if your DvD/CD Drive is listed look for RW which means rewritable (it can burn or copy). If it say DVDrw it can read and write dvd's. If it says CDrw it can read and write cd's. You can also look on the drive door on the computer where you would place the cd or dvd. If it says Rewritable CDrw (it can write cd's) or DvDrw (it can write dvd's). If it says ROM (read only media), that means it can Read Only and not write.

If the drive is rewritable then the software such as Media Player will allow you to go find what you want to put on the cd or dvd. You have two ways of putting things in the software to burn or write. You can copy and paste, or you can drag and drop.

No all cds/dvd work in all cd/dvd drives. I suspect your drive cannot read that make of cd although anothers cd rom can. Try making a copy of the disk on someone elses pc and try that in yours and you will probably find it works. You could always copy the cd to a pen drive and install it on yours from that.

Try burning the CDs or DVDs at slower speeds

if you have CD RAM/ROM + DVD ROM then change it to CD/DVD RAM because in case of CD RAM and DVD ROM it may read CD but not DVD but sometimes it can read DVD also but when we copy data to computer it may freeze or give us error so i give you one suggest to buy a new CD/DVD RAM

because ROM means read only memory and RW means read and write if u want"s to write DVD so change ur DVD-ROM into DVD+RW.

your DVD ROM lens has became weak.
and it cannot be repaired.
But if you manage to open the DVD ROM clean the dust in it & it will start working again but be careful remember that no power should be attached to ROM.
or you can buy a lens cleaner from market and try that.

Every CD is burnt. If it reads for instance original installation CD's or audio CD's than the problem isn't in DVD ROM but either in a type of DVD (-R,+R...) or the problem is caused due to fact that DVD wasn't closed after burning on another computer.

This ahs to with speed of recording of the CD/DVD try reading CD/DVD burnt at a lower speed like 16x.

Most DVD writers has low maximum reading speed as compared to CD-ROMs.

You can try burning a CD on it and then reading it, if reads then it shows that other cd were burnt at faster speed than it can read.

If it read lower speed CDs then you can just add an additional DVD/CD-ROM just to read faster speed disks.
