I am having a problem regards the CD/DVD drive on my Dell Dimension 5150. When I insert a disc all I get is a constant sort of clicking sound and the disc will not play. What do you think is the problem? Is a new drive required?

The clicking sound it likely indicative of a failed drive. A replacement DVD-RW drive is normally less than $50.
Before you replace it, you can try this:
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&os=W764&osl=en&SystemID=XPS/DIMENSION%20400/9150&catid=-1&impid=-1

Testimonial: "Your expert confirmed what I first thought namely that I needed to replace my cd/dvd drive. Thanks for answering my question as promptly as you did."

Which dell utility cd/dvd do i use to restart my disc drive

Hi, there is maybe a firmware upgrade for the drive from here:

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&os=WW1&osl=en&SystemID=DIMENSION%205150/E510&catid=-1&impid=-1

It should be under CD/DVD selection.
Unzip the file before installation.
Consider to change the IDE drive with a newer one or better
if the software update does not work.
The drive could also be broken.
As there is 8 different models of your drive
You have to look in the device manager to tell the name
of the drive.

Hi Charles,

The issue is due to the driver corruption. You need not worry, there is a simple solution for this.

Go to device manage --> right click on your CD/DVD drive and then click uninstall and then restart your computer. Do not keep any CDs while you do this. Just try this out.

Can't get Dell Desktop to recognize cd/dvd on D: drive

With any computer this is a question that must be answered by those that provide the driver software. Like the number above (Dimension 3100) you should begin your search here=> Dimension 3100 Drivers that is if you have not altered the driver by putting a different player in the slot. What you need to do is test the drive using the Dell diagnostics. The procedure can be found in the CD/DVD FAQ. Run the "read test". You'll need to insert various disc types during the test. This came from Dell Forums. Click Here=> Dell Forums/Osprey and Here=> Search Results for "Dimension 3100 DVD Driver"
Hope this helps, Thanks, Sea Breeze

Dell dimensions not reading cd

You could first go into the device manager and uninstall the CD. When restarted, the computer will identify it and reinstall it. If it is still unable to read the CD, try several other CDs. If that fails, you probably have a CD drive that has failed and will need to be replaced. They are not very expensive these days.

DVD tray automatically opens and closes

Is the drive reading disc properly? if no then just change the drive.

If it can read disc then

1) Do an msconfig & disable startup - just to make sure that there are no pesky script or applcation doing it.

2) change the SATA port on motherboard or toogle between master & slave if IDE cable is been used.

Still if its not working then just change the drive.
