Not hte setting problem, but more likely to be problem in the power supply /inverter circuits due to bad caps, shorted transistors, cold solder joints.
If you are going to DIY and have proper tools and know safety precaution then please read on:
Most common failures in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply (they should be replaced in a set), blown fuses; poor solder joints, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed DELL monitors to get some ideas what to look for: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums
Post back what you see inside so we can guide you further and it will help out other people in the future also.

My picture goes black after a few seconds

The contrast and brightness are controlled by the main board. If that board is not sending the right signals, the picture is dark.

42inch sonya flat sreen tv turn on I get sound I could see the sreen alittle bit but its dark

check the contrast and brightness settings. check if its set to minimum... if so just set to the correct contrast and brightness settings... if problem did not solve. and if its under warranty just bring the unit back to the store or in the authorized service center. or call a local repairman because there is no serviceable parts inside. ty

Why does my e153fpc go blank one second after turn on

Guest, Learn "flashlight test" first!! Point bright flashlight at screen (1 inch away) when screen goes black!!! Is Dell E153FP BLANK n BLACK? Or is it just BLACK? Can you still see very faint image of the icons and Win-desktop? If you read my fixya profile for a while you should then get back to me and tell me what you will do to restore unit to working order. There are lots of DIY video clips at YOUTUBE that will help you determine if you will do the repair or contract-out the work. DIY is still the cheapest way to go if you are handy with a oldering pencil and solder. Do your research first!!! All the cold-cathode-fluorescent-lamp-back-lit lcd monitor techs here on fixya already know you have a good chance to repair it. Just do some reading and follow the links you find for all the info you need. 12fixlouie

Dell E153FPc switches off (black Screen) after a few minutes. If you switch it off & back on again it will stay on for a few minutes, then go off again.

You could have an inverter board problem. The inverter supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp which provides the back-lighting.

E173FP 17" LCD Monitor Problem

I have the same problem. It seems like a virus to me, but my anti-virus doesn't find anything. I went to the main menu on the moniter and changed the display time to five seconds and locked the OSD display. Now all the appears is a smaller box showing a lock which goes out in five seconds. It is still annoying, but less intrusive then before. Hopefully, some one will determine a permanent fix for this problem.

Dell 17" monitor

I had a simalar problem with my Dell 2001FP. The issue is that there is false triggering of the switch; you need to open the front panel, and electrically remove the swictch from the circuit by: 1) analyze the circuit; its usally pretty simple - a voltage drop circuit. 2) disable the switch by either removing it with a solder gun or, simply by using a sharp blade and cutting the PCB track leading it to it, as I did.(much easier - and reversible!) Fixed my problem.
