The laptop can be password protected by several ways.
1. Power on password - you have to enter a password on powering up.
2. The hard drive can also be password protected and even if you place it into another laptop you cannot access the hard disk without the password.
3. You can also password protect the BIOS so you cannot change the power on password and the hard disk password.
You can hack into the laptop with some hardware and software.
Go to www.sodoityourself.com/hacking-ibm-thinkpad-bios-password/
see also www.allservice.ro
You will need a spare laptop/computer to install some software, some electronic knowledge and a fine tip soldering iron to build a hardware interface including purchasing some electronic components.

Have fun.

I also forgot to ask you, are you sure you password protected the hard disk only?
If you only password protected the BIOS you can remove it by disconnecting the BIOS and wait for 1/2 hour and reconnect the BIOS battery, the password would be erased and you will be able to go into the BIOS to check you password settings and change the BIOS settings.
If you didn't do this, then you don't have any option but to hack into your laptop, and this also could mean dismantling your laptop depending where the EEPROM chip is located.
There is no back door password to get into you laptop, IBM/Levono cannot help and this has been verified by a friend who works for IBM
If it is only the hard drive that is protected, you may consider buying a new hard drive and swapping hard drives which means reinstalling the Operating System software plus all your other software onto the new hard drive (you may find this an easier method than the hack method).
You can the use the old hard drive and install it into a USB external hard drive case, and then remove/delete the Windows directory to reclaim disk space, also this drive can be used to back up, data transfer, copy you data files back onto your laptop.
I have some password protected hard drives that I put to good use using this USB external hard method (waste not, want not).
