Strats up goes to detect drives then frezzes but reset sw then boot up and goes to widows. tried two different drives one sata and one ide both have the same problem can you help me
Please update MB with the latest bios version: http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite/Products/ProductsDetail.aspx?detailid=685&DetailName=Bios&MenuID=1&LanID=9 Flash from a floppy disk. Re check bios after flash. Go to Boot section. Make sure you have the correct drive listed in the boot order. If trouble still continues. Go to the serial ATA SATA hard drive's manufactures site. Download the tools/utilities & set the drive up with their bootable floppy disk software. (Do this without the IDE connected to the system). Try installing windows. You shouldn't have a problem. (The bootable floppy can also test the drive). Luck! If problem returns, please include detailed results. Mike

Could be an incorrect bios hard drive setting. Dell has a good customer service area. Did you use same type of drive SATA TO SATA? IDE to IDE? If you changed over there might be a setting to account for the difference.
Hi,
I think u have to download the driver for SATA drive!
Read again ur owners manual and download the driver and procedure so that the bios can detect the SATA HD!
May be the hard drive is not detecting properly on the computer.
Try resetting BIOS.
If that doesnt help, try checking your hard drive on a different computer or using some 3rd party HDD checker.
Make sure it is connected to power and SATA, try a different SATA connector on your motherboard, there are probably 4 different connectors.
Also make sure that the SATA controller is set to "NON RAID" mode in bios.
You need to go into BIOS to change these settings, If you don't know how to do it Give me your motherboard details (model no makers name)and I'll write you out a walkthrough to set the bios up properly for your drive
Once you reset the bios everything goes to manufactures default settings. You will need to make some changes within the bios. You'll need the help of the manual. See page 3-20. If your operating system is loaded on to the ATA IDE drive make sure you set bios settings as follows: Connect the ATA IDE to MB primary master IDE port. Connect the ATA SATA drive to the MB's first SATA port. ATA Configuration Set as, [P-ATA+S-ATA] S-ATA Keep [Enabled] Set to [Yes] This enables the SATA controller. P-ATA Keep [Enabled] Set to [Yes] This enables the IDE controller. On-chip IDE configuration, "ATA Configuration = [P-ATA+S-ATA]". Next go to Boot menu. Make sure the ATA IDE drive is chosen as boot device three. First boot device [Floppy] (If you have a floppy disk drive connected.) Second boot device would be [DVD/CD-ROM] drive. This should be connected to the MB's secondary IDE port & the DVD/CD-ROM drives Master/Slave jumper, set to Master. Third boot device [ATA IDE drive] If your boot drive is the SATA drive than set: third boot device to the SATA drive. (Hard disk drive with operating system loaded on it). Save your changes & exit the bios. Keep in mind all ATA SATA drives are seen as Master drives. SATA drives are seen by the SATA controller & in order by their connection to the SATA port number. Save & exit the bios. The system will auto restart. Windows should start.
Try Hirens Boot CD. It has a lot of programs on it to detect format etc. I think your hard drive has a missing or corrupt MBR and it needs to be replaced. When I have had a hard dive not recognized I hve used Super Fdisk to format and reset hard drive. On the boot disk
Different manufacturer's have different BIOS' so I can't say with certainty what you'll see in yours, but on my ASUS motherboards I have a one of three settings:
PATA
SATA
PATA+SATA
When I run both IDE and SATA drives I need to use the third setting. I sounds like you're shutting off the PATA when you enable the SATA so there's no drive from which to boot.
If I misunderstand your problem please let me know.
i am assuming you have allowed the bios to detect that there is a different hard drive fitted as it will be looking to boot from an non existent drive.
If you have fitted a new HDD with an operating system already on it then you will have to repair windows as its a change in hardware.
If you cant get the bios to see the drive then the motherboard has an IDE or Sata connector problem.
