I bought a second hand d70s. it seems to have a problem. the shutter release button does not seem to do anything when pressed half way (like auto focus). I can only get autofocus to work if i program AE-L/AF-L button to AF-ON. I press the AE-L/AF-L button on the back, then press the shutter to take the shot. And if i set the AE Lock On, pressing the shutter button half way does not lock the exposure setting. so there seems to be an issue with the shutter button itself...is there an easy fix? thanks.

From the manual:
"If the error display is not canceled when the shutter release button is pressed again, insert the Dark slide, half-press the shutter release button while pressing the roll film holder's manual film advance button to wind up the film, then contact your nearest Mamiya agent or service center."

have you contacted Nikon about this issue, they stand behid their products and since you have bought so many of these it seems to me that they will listen to you. Have you tried the camera in "auto" mode just to see if the problem is there too?
"rXX" is the cameras estimate of how many shots legt on your memory card. As for other issue: Turn camera "ON" and remove battery while holding shutter button for about 30 seconds. Turn off, reinsert battery, turn "ON" then press hardware reset button on bottom of camera for about 2 seconds. Page 200 in Nikon d70 (do not know about d70s) manual.
To get it to instantly take the picture, you must press the button half-way and allow the camera to lock in the focus (it will beep)...then when the moment is right, press the rest of the way.
You need to press the shutter button half-way and allow the camera to lock in the focus before you press the rest of the way. This eliminates "shutter lag".
Make sure both lens and body are set for autofocus. There are two switches near each other with "AF" and "M" settings.
Check the camera's focusing settings, or do a factory reset (from menu) to 'start over'. Usually helps to have AF-Assist on.
Try setting the AE/AF-lock button (upper rear, near right thumb when holding camera) to turn on AF. The camera may respond better to this than half-pressing the shutter release.
Make sure the lens is fully attached to the camera. You shouldn't be able to rotate the lens without depressing the lens release button, and you should be able see a tight seal between the two.
Be sure you are on auto. Pressing the shutter release down half way causes the camera to focus. This needs to happen to get a clear picture. Be sure you have adequite light or the auto focus will not work. You might need to set your flash to auto as well . Them by pressing the shutter release the rest of the way down, you will get a picture. But gain, you need to allow it to focus first, then take the photo.
When this happens with my D70s, I know of two options. 1) use manual focus or 2) autofocus on another object about the same distance away from my subject (holding the shutter release half way) and then move the camera back to my subject composition. This seems to happen when there is little contrast in the scene, i.e., a field of same colored flowers. Hope this helps.
Format the card. I have same problem with mine ---requires a new shutter assembly.$40.00 item and they want $300.00 to fix it at Henry`s cameras. Ouch .Better to buy a new camera.
Are those NiMH batteries? Have you tried resetting the camera? If no standard way, just take out batteries for a few minutes, the more the merrier, let the tension build, and replace them.
Try tapping on the lens area, it might loose something up.
Best I can do, know it aint much ;]
Good luck!
