Well, this pretty much comes down to how much $ or € or any other currency you're willing to spend as well as what games you're most likely to play.
If you don't wanna spend a fortune but still get a very good and reasonable performance, you could try GeForce 7600 GT or 7800 GT [7800 GT being better]. Both of these can be had quite cheaply these days. If you want something even more powerful that doesn't require you to sell a kidney on E-bay, then try GeForce 8800 GT, more precisely MSI NX8800GT-OC. Compared to ordinary 8800GT's, this one's beefed up just a bit more. Alternatively - if you can find that specific mode - almost any would do; still, I'd recommend Asus EN8800GT.
As you may have noticed, I've suggested only nVidia cards: I've never been too much into ATI + nVidia is leading the race these last few months. However, if you want to swing ATI way, then instead of 7800 GT find yourself a some ATI 1950 XT or whatever they call it. It is roughly equivalent to the 7800.
For high end ATI's, look for 3850 HD or something akin to that - there's a lot of review online.
Remember: read reviews first - shop later.
P.S. Make sure your PCI-Express x16 slot really is a x16 by reading your motherboard manual.

Hope it helps. Rate me. Thanks.
