Possible fuel pump problem. Try banging on the gas tank with a heavy object ( hammer ) while turning the key over. If it starts/tries to start, suspect a fuel pump failure
i would start by getting somebody to cycle the key on and off while you listen to hear if the fuel pump is turning on or not. (when the key is turned on the fuel pump will turn on and you should hear it start up and then turn off.) if you can hear the fuel pump come on then i would check to see if the fuel filter is plugged. if you cannot hear the fuel pump you should check your fuses. if all the fuses are good then get a rubber mallot and bang on the bottom of the gas tank. the vibrations usually will get a fuel pump to start up again and your car should start up.(if it fires up after banging on the gas tank, you will need to replace the fuel pump. the banging on the gas tank only works a couple of times. enough to get you home or to a shop to replace.)
the fuel pump uses the fuel as a lubricant. when the fuel tank runs dry the fuel pump can overheat and sieze up. If you have power to your fuel pump plug then you may need to replace the fuel pump. check fuses and relays for the fuel pump circuit. Listen for the fuel pump to come on when you turn the key to the "run" position. Some people have luck by banging on the fuel tank while turning on the key to unstick the pump. don't count on this though.
Turn the key to the ON position without starting the engine. You should hear the fuel pump running for 5 seconds if working. This primes the gas to the injectors when doing this. If not heard running check the oil pressure switch for the 12 volts needed to run the fuel pump starts there on that harness. When the engine starts and the oil pressure reaches the normal pressure the computer shuts off that circuit and turns on the fuel pump relay to run the pump. The relay stays on till you shut the engine off
fuel pump bad or fuel pump relay bad. Likely fuel pump.
Spray some starting fluid in air intake and see if it starts. If yes, replace fuel pump in fuel tank. drop tank for access. About a $250 repair at shop. call around.
if its petrol engine bang bottom of fuel tank while some one else cranks vehicle over if it starts good just pump jammed if it dont buzz to life and you cant hear fuel pump buzzing ceck for power to it if thats there replace pump. running out of fuel kills electric fuel pumps internally in petrol tanks.
if its diesel you must bleed fuel system taking extreme care if you un do lines some very high pressure
