Dell dimension 5100, power button has turned orange

Hi, I have a dell dimension 5100 pc, It has worked fine until recently. One day when working on the computer a loud fan noise came on and the screen went blank, i turn the computer off, when i switched it back on again the power button instead of being green turned orange. I looked inside and the green light is on the mother board. I have also replaced the power lead and power supply unit inside the computer without success. When the computer hasn`t been used for a long time it occassional starts up ok but then the same thing happens again and the loud fan noise comes on.
Can anyone help.
cheers clare

I have the same problem with the Dell 5100. It will start occasionally and when it actually powers up it works great, but it usually doesn't start. A loud fan revs up and the system shuts down and when I try to turn it back on I see an orange light instead of green and nothing else happens. It can't be the hard drive because when it powers up it works great, but I have no idea what it might be. Anyone who can help would be greatly appreciated !! PBJ

Hello,

I had the same problem with my dimension 5100. It appeared to be one of my memory cards. When I removed it from the memory slot, it worked again. However, my fan is making an incredible noise. Does anyone now how to fix this?

If under warranty contact Dell? I had this same problem, a new motherboard and fan assembly fixed this problem. Bad capacitors on the motherbard.

Call Dell , go to www.dell.com at a computer at the library, if you donot have another, and get the support number. . My pc was under warranty. I saw that model for just the pc to buy new at $200.00. Better to buy new.

PC on button flashes orange when trying to turn PC on.

Have you installed any new hardware recently? If so you may be reaching the limitations of your PS (power supply), or the supply may becoming old. One day when the button no longer works you will need to replace the Power Supply (or the button?). If you need assistance when doing this I can offer walkthrough help at http://www.hoosierpcrepair.com

Dell Dimension 5100 Won't start up

Hi

First disconnecting the power cord and re-seat all connections (Keyboard, Mouse espercially). Connect up the power cord and try powering the PC.

To help you troubleshoot a problem, Dell Dimension 5100 has four diagnostic lights labeled "1," "2," "3," and "4" on the front panel. When the computer starts normally, the lights flash. After the computer starts, all four lights display solid green. If the computer malfunctions, the color and sequence of the lights identify the problem.

If the computer failed to start up check the diagnostic lights color and sequence and Check the link below for more info (Assuming you have another system that can access internet)
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim5100/en/sm/tshoot1.htm#wp1120147

Alternatively, contact Dell Support with the diagnostic lights color and sequence to raise a service call if the system if under warranty.

Dell Dimensions 5100 Power Button

The power light is tied to the Mother Board and therefore it could be an issue with just about anything on the PC. Here is the trouble shooting documentation and the link should bring you directly to what the various conditions of the power LED mean.

There is also a detailed listing for the HD light as well as some diagnostic lights (if your paticular variation is equiped)
