Dell Dimensions 5100 Power Button

I have a Dell dimensions 5100.

The power button 'Flickers' orange, it is not a standard flash but flickers as though there is a faulty connection.

Any ideas what it could be.

This happened a cuople of days ago and after a bit is testing (removing /reseating/cleaning) I played about with the button and it started up agaian, although it then blue screened and I had to run a chkdsk on the drive to repair it.

It has now happened again.

I am assuming based on the fact I had it working again that it is not a power supply issue - could it be a faulty power button?

    Thanks.

I have checked these and the status of my power button is not listed.

It is not Blinking but looks like is has a poor connection, it is Flickering.

Also there are no diagnostic lights on - this morning after leaving it with a flickering power button for over an hour, the light went out and the PC could be powered up as normal.

On 2nd anniversary of purchasing my Dell Dimension 5100 desk top it
suddenly refused to power up. The LED flasher in the power button
suggested it was a POST failure. Local comp engineers said (without
testing!) it was definitely a motherboard failure and I would have to
order a new case and mobo from DELL as DELL did not supply mobo's for
this model on their own. I began lengthy (and fruitless) e-mail
correspondence with DELL about whether this was true and how I could
get a replacement mobo from them. After weeks of being given the
run-around by different departments it turned out that they do not
supply spares to the public and as I was out of warranty the only thing
they were prepared to do was to take it in as an out-of-warranty repair
with no kind of guarantees as to what the final cost might be. I then
gave it to a friend of mine who does some IT work as part of his
day-job and builds systems for people after work. He initially changed
the power supply, cleaned out a load of dust, and the comp powered up
and worked fine for 2 days. Then it stopped again. Same problem. He
took it back, stripped it down again. Could not find any fault.
Baffled, he left it for a few days that put it back together and what
do you know? - It powered up! Well I had it back for about 3 weeks and
it went again. In each case of failure, it had been in use by my son
for gaming on the internet (via STEAM) and had frozen completely, so
that the only way to escape was to power off via the power button. I
left it unplugged for a few days and it then started again is nothing
had ever gone wrong! My friend suggested it might be a BIOS corruption
and the draining of all power, including the battery, would clear it.
My DELL has just gone down with same problem again and is now
unplugged. As before, it was being used in internet gaming on STEAM
just before it froze and had to be manually turned off. I am hoping I
will get it started again but would like to know what is causing the
problem and if anything can be done to avoid it in future.

The power light is tied to the Mother Board and therefore it could be an issue with just about anything on the PC. Here is the trouble shooting documentation and the link should bring you directly to what the various conditions of the power LED mean.

There is also a detailed listing for the HD light as well as some diagnostic lights (if your paticular variation is equiped)

Are you sure you have the connections set up properly. I sounds as though it could be that the Power Light wire is plugged in to the HD spot???

When it does start up it does so properly without any issues what so ever? It just seems to lag when plugged in and then after a short time you can start it up normally?

Main power button LED is flashing or solid yellow

This is a major problem that crippled Dell. Moels Optiplex Gx260, Gx 280, and Dimensions of whose mdel number i don't remember have this problems. This signal shows that either a power supply or your motherboard is malfunctioning. If you have an insurance better use it now or else get some technical assistance.

Dell Dimension 5150 automatically turns off

That flashing amber light is usually a sign the power supply is failed or is failing. I would suspect the power supply is the problem in yours. It is the better of the two problems connected with the flashing amber light..the other is motherboard is failing. Arrrr!
hope this helps (it takes a standard- oh say 350 watt 20-24 pin power supply unit.)
Hope an answer helps.
