try your sim in a different phone and make sure its not just a bad sim. if it is a bad sim most companys will give you a new one free of charge. if it works in another phone you'll want to do a master reset to see if its a software problem or a problem with the actual hardware (the metal connections that interact with the sim). to do the master reset per,http://nds1.nokia.com/phones/files/guides/Nokia_1600_UG_en.pdf select menu, settings restore factory settings, then restore all. if it asks you for a code it will be 12345 or 1234 unless you set another pin in which case it will be your pin. i hope this helps

Did you try cleaning the sim card slot contacts. It might just be dirty.

Either your sim card is not seated correctly, the contacts are dirty, the sim card is dead, the copper contacts in the phone do not reach the sim card or the electronics in the phone are faulty. try to change a new battery' or maybe the sim card driver is unsoldered' or need to replace. here is the pics. skilled technician can do.
