Dell Vostro A860 running Vista Home Basic, fan is always running full speed, the system seems slow. I wonder if there are processes running in the background that I don't need.

HP Pavilion dv7-1285dx keeps overheating and shutting down

sure it does all PCs do that, full of lint, all do.
we clean it.
it has fan and vents
all fans all vents and heatsinks must breath or it overheats.
all do that not cleaned, drive your car around with the radiator blocked, boom.
all PCs run slow overheated, by DESIGN.
this slow down , reduces heat, and saves CPU/GPU burn up.
just like my chevy, truck, it cuts cylinders to save the engine.
same deal both.

same deal; same reasons.

What is the processor fan speed for Dell Vostro A860?

This could be the result of to much dirt build up in the heat sink ports blocking vital air flow. Buy a can of compressed air and blow it on fan any open ports, this should prove if the fans the issue, the speed should slow down because of increase air flow cooling the laptop. If this works the machine should be taken apart for better clean out.

Slow start up and shut down

Hello,

You didn't mention what version of Windows (Is it Windows, or is it Linux / other?) that you are using. For laptops in particular, windows sometimes gets confused as to which power saving state that the laptop should be in.

Next time that windows is running, you should see an icon of either a battery, or of a power plug in the area next to the clock (lower right corner). If you LEFT click on this, there will be a list of various power schemes that are available. MAX BATTERY will reduce the processor speed the most, while ALWAYS ON turns off power saving altogether, and allows the laptop to run at full speed.

If your fan always seems to be on, or seems to be cycling on and off rapidly even though you are doing little with the computer, then you might need to have the fan and heatsink cleaned out (consult a computer shop). When the processor starts to run hot, the motherboard will begin to slow it down regardless of the power scheme.

You might also be looking at a program that is loading during startup (did you just happen to install Open Office by chance?) that also takes a while to unload while shutting down. Consider what you have recently installed, and check your startup menu (click start >> programs >> startup ) to see what is being loaded there.

Why is my dell vostro a860 overheating all the time?

It should be normal, make sure you don't block air from bottom the laptop or any sides because that is where fan sucking the air to cool off the core. If that does overheating then it should be shut down by self because it already built in temp sensor for overheating protect.

How do i install the 2Gb memory stick(s) into the Dell Vostro A860 Intel® Celeron M® M560 (2.13GHz, 1M L2 Cache, 533MHz FSB) Service tag number: 81TVLH1????????

This could be a sign that your laptop is overheating. If you touch the laptop while it is running & you find it too hot, make sure that the fan is running properly & that the air ways are not blocked.
You can blow compressed air into the cooling vents of the fan. If you notice clouds of dust coming out, then it might be a good idea to disassemble the laptop, clean the fan & air ways, & reassemble it back. If the fan has failed & is no longer running, it might need to be replaced.

If none of this solves the problem, or is not the case, then you might have a bad motherboard.

Original xp

Hi Vostro owner.Dont worry, this can be sorted.Sound issue is not because u installed windows from a Non-dell cd.But i would ask to call up dell because they will provide u the XP disc that should have come with the system or even it is lost from you. Also then we can download the driver from support site : www.support.dell.com and install it.It is just a mere coincidence now.But the reason i'm asking to get cd from Dell is so that u can avoid any future problems with installing XP from a non-dell cd
