If you can't plug in the ethernet cable to the back of the computer, then there is no ethernet card (NIC).

You'll need to buy an addo-on card, which doesn't cost a lot, plug it in and install the software which comes with it.

I JUST BOUGHT THE D-LINK DIR-615 (N300) _ WIRELESS ROUTER, IT TELLS ME TO HOOK UP TO MY MODEM BUT I DO NOT HAVE A MODEM, I HAVE DSL BUT IT IS RUN FROM THE OUTSIDE BOX ALONG WITH MY TV AND PHONE, MY DSL...

The router needs to have a modem to run off from, Even DSL provides modems if you do not have a modem then your DSL ISP (Internet Service Provider) did not provide you with one. I would suggest to follow the ethernet cord and see where it plugs into. You will need a modem to use a router.
tip

Internet Connection Basics

Modern high-speed internet connections are made using DSL or cable modems. In general, most DSL modems also act as routers, but not too many cable modems act like a router.

Some internet connection basics: Every device connected to the internet has an IP (Internet Protocol) address. The address consists of 4 groups of up to 3 numbers each. They would look like this: 123.111.36.145 (0 is the smallest number and 255 is the largest you will see). When you connect to the internet, you are assigned an IP address by your ISP (Internet Service Provider). When you hook up your computer
to the modem, the signal is passed through the device to your computer and the device's IP address becomes your address. This is not secure, as the "bad guys" could type your IP address into their machine and theoretically see your computer and access all your data.

Connecting with your modem: Modems come with a CD nowadays. Running the setup CD makes connecting quite easy. With a DSL modem, you normally have to provide a username and password to log on. Cable modems generally rely on the cable connection to your house to recognize who you are and when you run the setup CD, you are automatically connected.

The router: The purpose of this device is twofold--one is to take the signal you get from your ISP and send it to a number of computers in your home network. The second purpose is to take the IP address and send it to a different address on each computer. This acts as a "firewall" in that the IP address assigned to your computer is no longer the address of the computer. Those bad guys trying to hack into your system will have a much more difficult time.

Types of routers: There are wired routers capable only of hooking up computers with ethernet cable within a network. There are wireless routers--normally these have 4 wired ports and a set of antennas. These function will in a mixed environment of wired and wireless computers. Most people these days are using wireless routers.

In my next tip, I'll describe how you go about hooking up your new router to an existing internet connection.

Hello there!

If you originally received your modem from your internet service provider, then you'll need to call their customer support and let them know that your modem has likely gone bad. They'll either ship a new one to you directly, or send someone physically to your residence with a new modem to change it out and very likely test your wiring / "line noise" to see if there's an issue with the incoming wire which hooks into your modem.

If you purchased this modem yourself, then you'll need to either visit your local electronics store and tell them who your internet service provider is, and that you need a replacement modem which is compatible with their service; or visit ebay.com, and do a search for: "(your internet company's name) DSL modem". There will most assuredly be many folks selling new or barely-used modems which would be compatible with your internet provider's service.

I hope my answer has helped!

I have hooked my di 524 from my DSL cable modem then hooked the two in line to my computer when I hooked up to the computer I have no connectivity why?

OK, if I understand:
telephone----DSL Modem--di 524--computer.
That is what you are supposed to do.
Has any configuration of these devices ever had any connectivity?
1. Is the DSL modem in "Bridge Mode"? That is the first thing I'd check.
2. Are you using the right wires and ports? There may be a DCE-DTE problem. Be sure you have used the wire that came with the DSL modem to hook it to the internet port on the DI-524.
3. What is the state of all the various lights? Do they show that you have valid connections?
4. Most of these devices can be configured with a browser. When you browse them, what do you see?
5. What is windows telling you?

Just connected router to clear network modem and VoIP (wireless phone service), now when the phone ring, it disconnects me from the internet and the connection is lost until the phone call is complete.

Is your modem a DSL or cable modem?
If it is a DSL modem do you have a DSL filter on each phone line to the phones in your house?
The DSL modem does not need a DSL filter on the phone line.

I can't get on the internet

>> do i have to call my internet service provider to activate my modem?

Yes.

Each modem has a unique "address", and your I.S.P. uses that address to authorize each DSL-modem that tries to connect to their network.

Or, if the two of you live in the same house/apartment, you should just buy a "router". Then, both computers can connect to the router, and the router connects to the DSL modem, and both of you can "share" the monthly fee for the _one_ Internet connection.

Can't get a wireless router to work with a speedstream 4200

This may actually be an issue with your ISP. There is a good possiblity that your ISP has bound your connection to the MAC address of the network card on your computer. This is a common occurance which is why router manufacturers give you the option of having your router clone your computer's MAC address. Go into your router's management an perform the clone, sorry I cannot give you more details but I don't know the specific model of your Belkin router.
