This model supports the following formats: 1080i, 720p, 720i, 480p, 480i. Most likely it isn't the TV that is not allowing the 1080i resolution but rather your cabling or the inputs that you are using.
Be sure that that you have an HD signal coming into the TV. You may have to upgrade your cable subscription or if you already have the channels sometimes you have to tell your cable box to use 1080. The same goes for DVD players; they often default to only 480 to maximize compatibility.
The other area to check is your cabling. For the best results use HDMI or Component video.

If you have already checked both of these options let me know & I'll try to come up with some other options for you.

I he 1080 vizio lcd tv it powers up but no screen no sound

There should be a troubleshooting procedure in the manual. Most likely, the TV is set to look for input from an external source. The manual should show where the input selector is, and step you through the process. The number you posted (1080) doesn't appear to be a model number, but rather a video standard, so I can't post a link to the manual, but the vizio site http://www.vizio.com

We just bought a Visio LCD TV 42 inch. The problem is with the volume going up and down on its own. We took it back and got another Visio and it's doing the same thing. Do you think the problem is...

Hello there, the probability of 2 Vizio LCD's having the same problem is quite abnormal. The problem is definitely from the cable box as LCD TV's are usually factory tested to ensure that such problems dont exist in the unit. Check the cable box and also check the cables with which the cable decoder is connected to the TV. This is where your problem is from.

I have a Vizio LCD HDTV 1080 120hz 37", ModelSV370XT. (Bought 1/10/10 at Costco) The tv fell to the ground resulting in scratches appearing in the picture screen. You can't feel scratched on the TV surface...

The statement was not complete in the forum , hence I presume the LCD was damaged while it fell to the ground.
The cost of replacing a new LCD to a new set must be reviewed unless you are able to get one swapped from an old one.

How do you set our vizio to 1080p it is currently set at 480p

You really don't think you set the TV for this, if the TV supports 1080p and the device was 1080 capabilities then the TV will recognize this. If you using a cable box make sure your using the HDMI port on the cable box. I have seen in the past cable companies just using the component ports.

We have cable T.V. should we run the cable though T.V. when we use s-video cables or use cable though vcr then T.V.

I would hope that you would use a HDMI cable to connect your cable box to your LCD TV - why not display the highest resolution to your screen that you can. HDMI will transmit the 1080P high def signal to your screen. These cables can be found at Wallmart and Target or even Best Buy. Don't need the most expensive and or a 6' length or short will work just fine.
Then use your S-Video cable to connect your VCR/DVD to your LCD TV - This is not a High Def signal - only 480i if that. The P means Progressive or 1080 lines from top to bottom. the I means Interlaced to which means 240 lines once for field one then 240 lines for field two.
You may want to think of a blue ray player to which upconverts your older DVD's to 4x3 High Def resolution.

Vizio 42" lcd powers up with sound only - no picture

It sounds to me that the unit has a faulty inverter board which could be due to an overheated/bulged capacitor. I would send in a claim on it to the factory if it is still under warranty.
