1991 Honda 750 Nighthawk...been running great. Hadn't ridden it much last 30 days or so...got on it tonight, noticed a sluggish throttle. Initially, there was slight black smoke coming from the exhaust. Rode it a little, smoke got worse...acceleration became more sluggish. Smoke worsened. After about 10 minutes engine quit; let it rest for 10 minutes, it started back up....sluggish, and still smokey. Rode a few minutes, got it home. Now it won't start.
Carb. needs to be rebuilt sounds like trash in the float body or in the needles try using some sea foam in the gas tank (if u get it to start again) it has probably fouled out the plugs

I suspect that the throttle cable is out of the end setting from removing and replacing the carbs or a return spring for the cable has broken off and not pulling the throttle back to idle position
I have had my 2008 Nighthawk 250 up to 70mph with some left over. I just got it so I haven't really run it full throttle yet ( 75 miles on the OD ) I weight 300 lbs. I would guess 80 on a flat road. I felt comfy at 70 but this is my 5th bike. I bought this one for the gas mileage and 1 yr. warranty. I will try actual top speed on the Interstate in about 1000 miles. Hope this helps. follow your accel cable to the carb. move the throttle till you see where the linkage moves. look around the linkage to see what it hits on at no throttle. that will be your idle screw
