HP 8200e CD Writer not recognized by Windows XP

I have an HP 8200e CD Writer attached to a laptop running Windows XP. The Device Manager says the device is present and working correctly.
But the HP Product Detection tool says there are no HP products on my system.
They can't both be right, so which is it?
You've guessed that the device is not working - in fact the system crashes as soon as I insert a disk.
The latest driver has been installed from the HP website by following their instructions. Is there a way to verify this?

    Thanks Armstrng,
The Device Manager is aware of it, so I assume it is ok in the BIOS - maybe that's wrong.
It does eject by right-clicking as you describe.

You'll need to tell me where to find the event viewer logs, and I did not do a firmware update - it was not an option with any of the installation procedures.
    Thanks, John Wheeler

Is it being seen in the BIOS? If you go to "My Computer", right click the dvd choose eject, does it eject? If you look in your event viewer logs what are the error reports showing (if anything)? Did you do a firmware update?

You can access these logs here:

Right click on "My Computer", scroll down and click on "Manage"
This will open your "Computer management" window.
On the left side you will see "Event viewer".
Click on the plus sign and it will open the log files. The ones you want to look at will be Application or System.
Now, if you see an error, double click on it and a window will open. Pay close attention to the "Source, Category and Event ID" names and numbers.
Now with the Event ID number, go to this site: http://www.eventid.net/
Plug in your data and do a search.
It may help to tell you why the computer is crashing when inserting disks.

Hope this helps.

My computer no longer "sees"

hello
at end of this instruction set, see link to review more questions/answers,as your issue with CD/DVD ROM will vary .

This document applies to HP and Compaq desktop computers with Windows XP, Me, and 98. Use this document to make Windows and the CD writing software recognize the CD or DVD writer drive. Start at Step 1; do not skip to other sections until Step 1 has been completed. Step 1: Does Windows detect the CD or DVD drive? Use Device Manager to determine if Windows is recognizing the drive:
  1. In Windows XP, click Start , and right-click My Computer . In Windows 98 and Me, right-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
  2. In Windows XP, select Properties , click the Hardware tab, and then click the Device Manager button. In Windows 98 and Me, select Properties , and click the Device Manager tab.
  3. Click the plus sign (+ ) next to DVD/CD-ROM Drives (or similar) category.
  4. Do the following depending on what is listed in the DVD/CD-ROM drives category:
    • If the CD or DVD drive name is missing , the drive is not being detected by Windows. Close Device Manager and skip to the section CD or DVD drive is not recognized by Windows .
    • If a drive name is shown but is disabled (icon is marked with a red X, c00877300.gif ), the drive has been disabled. Right-click the drive name and select Enable . You may have to restart the computer to complete the enabling process. The drive should work correctly once it has been enabled. NOTE: If the drive cannot be enabled, a required service or driver that the drive needs is not functioning or has been disabled. Click the plus sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers and troubleshoot any problems found according to any error codes in Device Manager. Resetting the BIOS may also resolve this problem.
    • If a drive name is shown but contains an alert icon (an icon marked with an alert symbol, c00877301.gif ), then use the section Using Device Manager error codes to troubleshoot the problem. You may also use the next section Disc burning software does not recognize the original drive to reset the drive configuration.
    • If the CD or DVD drive is listed as normal but your disc burning software does not recognize the drive, Device Manager shows no special icons c00877302.gif . Windows is detecting the drive but the writing software does not. Leave Device Manager open and continue with the next section Disc burning software does not recognize the original drive .

My lg writer is not burning properly it is asking for a new firmware because of using windows 07...

I have run into this a few times and there is something you can try. Make sure you are connected to the internet, go to control panel and then to device manager. Scroll down to the cd/dvd device, select the installed drive and right click, then uninstall the device, hit ok and reboot. When windows reboots, it will recognize the device and install it, it may ask to search windows update for an updated driver, allow it to.

My CD/DVD player no longer works!!! HELP!!

If you are using windows XP, right click on "My Computer" go to "Properties" click on "Properties" it will Bring up a System Properties window. click on "Hardware" tab. in the middle you will see a tab that says "Device Manager" click on that. Look in the list to see if your Cd/DVD drive is shown. If it is and has a big yellow "?" on it or a yellow "?" with a "!" on top of the yellow "?" then the CD/DVD drive is still being recognized by the motherboard. In this case, replacing the driver will most likely do the trick. If you are running Vista, or Windows 7, access the Device Manager by right clicking on "My Computer" then go to "Properties".it will pop up a "Control Panel Home" window. The first entry is the "Device Manager" click on that to open the device manager. From there, the same thing applies to the XP instructions. If the CD/DVD is not listed in the list, try rebooting the system then repeat the process. If the CD/DVD still does not show up, there is most likely a problem with the drive or motherboard not recognizing the drive. If the latter seems to be the issue then taking it to a reputable repair facility might be your only option. If it is the yellow "?" you should be able to find the driver at HP's website http://www.hp.com/#Support once this is downloaded, double click on the file and it should start running the driver installer. Then just follow the prompts of the installer.

Windows XP not recognizing cds/dvds in my HP DVD640i

Most likely your CD-DVD burning software is corrupted. When that happens, the machine doesn't recognize the existence of the CD/DVD hardware. Clean up your machine, defrag, run a freeware registry cleaer-defragmenter (see C-net for a good one). Then Reinstall/upgrade your burning software (the Windows XP software is not sufficient) either from HP/Compaq, if it came with your machine, or the program website if you purchased it separately. You may find out which it is by using a marvelous freeware program called Belarc advisor.
