SOURCE: Roper tiller 26 inch front tine Pulley/belt diagram

I am not sure either, but I think that it would be alot cheeper to buy a new tiller, than to use your strenght fixing a old tiller that you didn't bother to keep the instructions for (no, I am not trying to be harsh. I am trying to be nice. and I am not sure about it coming with instructions, they usually do.)

Here is a link that may help. SOURCE: Yardman Rear Tine Tiller tines won't turn. Belt

I had this same problem and took the first advice about the shift fork arms being too spread apart. I took apart the gearbox apart and found that the shift fork arms did indeed spread apart overtime and with wear. I'm having a buddy weld some reinforcement to it as long as he can maintain clearance in certain areas as to not disrupt the operation. If it doesn't work then I did find the shift fork assembly part for $50, I just googled the part number, clicked on various sites, and found a better price!

My Earthquake Rear Tine Gas Rototiller - 196cc Viper Engine 4-cycle just makes a squeeling noise and tines won't rotate.

Sounds like the belt is slipping. Have you removed the belt cover and inspected the belt and the tensioner pulley ? If your model is like mine the tension can be adjusted just below the handles by looseneing the nut where the cable goes into the cable sheath and moving the cable cover further away from the handle. That takes up some slack and will make the tensioner pulley tighter on the belt. If the belt is shot tension isn't going to help.
Try "google" with "earthquake 5070 manual" first option should be a PDF copy of a model 5070 manual. Will have diagrams on how to adjust the cables.

Need to see belt route for gilson bros. tiller

You did not state if it was a front or rear tine tiller. This is for the front tine tiller:
http://photos.cubfest.com/albums/userpics/10231/Belt_Routing.jpg
The rear belt has a 1/2 twist in it for reverse. The front belt goes on nomally.

If this does not help you I would like a model number if you can locate it so I can get your the proper routing diagram.
