Screen goes black after 30 mins of working.

Hi. I have a Dell Dimension 5100 (4 years old). After switching it on, it works fine for 30 to 45 minutes, then the screen goes black. There is still power to the screen and the computer. If I then switch it off and leave it for 10 to 15 minutes, it will switch back on but then the screen goes black again after a similar time. It looks like something is overheating and failing. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. Roy.

Seems as if the power supply is having faillure ? This can also be due to an overload from any junction to the motherboard: a graphics card, consuming to many power, switched my PC off at random and more frequently as time elapsed.

There are a few things you need to check here.
1. It could be that your computer power management is set to turn your monitor and harddrive off after 30 to 45 min.

If the computer is however working for 30 to 45 min while you doing stuff and it shuts off, the there is an internal problem "Hardware"

I would suggest you check to see if the power management is set to turn off monitor 30 min and harddrive after 45 min. IF that is not so, then we go on to the next test.

It could possibly be your processor fan is not working so once your processor gets over heated it shuts off the computer.

Turn off the computer, remove the case "this is only if you know what you are doing" with the case off, power on the computer and see if the processor fan is working.

You can get back to me and I can walk you through it.

Hope thiss help.

Turn on notebook (A200 2 years old). Runs fine for about 10 minutes then screen goes blank. if you plug in an external monitor both screens work. This is not an intermittent problem.

Have you check screen power down could be it is setup to shut down as you say after 10 mins. Access power through control panel, change settings ie to 30 mins
