The simple answer is you can't, unless you want to fool around with the software in your phone using Bitpim, or a similar program.

Go to settings to phone to sound and select message tone. (or on those lines). There you will find a list of all the ring tones, including your MP3 collection. Select the ringtone that you have as your ringtone.

Straightly you cant assign any music files as your message tones. But you can do it if you modify the phone system files which may result in serious problem of spoiling the phone if you use the modification software wrongly. I strongly suggest you not to do that. Copy all of your contacts from your smartchip to your phone/handset and it should work fine. Just had the same problem.
