There were 13 New England States, which were the Origin of United States Of America. After they came from England, set up a Pilgramige here on the North Eastern Coast, they had not yet ventured across the rest of America. They called them New England, as a symbolism for departing from England and becoming a New World of sorts.

Here is a history of New England, with a map, and a lot of info on them:

The history of New England is the history of the New England region of North America in the current-day United States. New England is the oldest clearly defined region of the United States, and it predates the history of the United States by over 150 years. While New England was originally inhabited by Indigenous peoples, English Pilgrims and especially Puritans, fleeing religious persecution in England, arrived in the 1620-1660 era. They dominated the region; their religion was later called Congregationalism. They and their descendants are called Yankees. Farming, fishing and lumbering prospered, as did whaling, sea trading, and merchandising.

The new England colonies were the first colonies of Great Britain in the northern corner of North America. They were the first places colonized by the English, beginning with the landing of Pilgrims at Plymouth in 1620. That small group of people were joined by others with landings in 1623 and later. From those small beginnings colonists moved southward and northward eventually forming additional colonies in what is now known as New Hampshire and Rhode Island. These first colonies were known as "NEW England" because the colonists for the most part, considered themselves Englishmen from England.

What is one reason that thomas paine thinks the colonies stand good chance against the british

Thomas Paine thinks the colonies stand a good chance against the British because if the colonies declare independence, then the enemies of the British are no longer also the enemies of the colonists, and that they can work with other countries.
