Depends on what kind of phone it is, if it's an IPhone double tap the home button and all your open apps appear which you can then swipe them up and off the screen, if it's an android phone hold the middle button or the button on the left (recent apps button) and you can then swipe them left or right off the screen
Try closing all apps then restarting the iPad. To do this, double-tap the home button to bring up multitasking, then swipe each app up to close it. Once all of your apps are closed, turn your iPad off then back on again. This will fix the crashing problem.
Hmm, best thing I can say is double tap the home button to bring up the open apps on your iPad. Then close the instance of the app (and any other apps) by swiping the screen images upwards. That should force the app to 'reboot' and may fix your problem.

and to totally close the apps open, double tap the home key then tap the apps below which will be appearing after you double tap the home key then tap the "x" or just swipe up.

Then, tap on the overdrive app icon again to reopen the app. You'll be at your bookshelf but, tapping on the book you were reading will return you to that page.
