SOURCE: Cannot pull the cord more than 6 inches to start Toro lawn mower.

Hi Patti, If you can not pull the cord more that what you said, try removing the spark plug and see if that makes a difference, if not, leave the spark plug out to prevent accidental starting, raise up the front of the mower and see if you can turn the blade if not...it only gets worse from there. If you can't turn the blade from under the mower, the engine is more that likely seized up, sorry

SOURCE: lawn mower pull cord

This works best with two people. Remove cover and pull cord will be inside cover. If your handle on pull cord is attatched to a metal ring up on the handle, you will need 8 foot of new pull cord.
With all the old cord removed, wind cord pulley 6 revolunations, now, have someone hold the pulley, while you string the new cord thru pulley and out the cord hole on cover. Be sure to put a knot on the end going thru pulley. Draw cord all the way thru and out of the cover. Attatch the handle and let it rewind. You will have extra cord, this will be used up going from engine up the handle. I hope this helps

Do a compression check. If there is no resistance when pulling engine over then you have major problems. ( new engine)

Repair lawn mower pull cord

Home Depot sells a replacement pull cord kit that has great instructions. My mower, however, had pop rivets holding the cover on the engine, so if yours does too, get a pop rivet tool with the correct size pop rivets before you start drilling out the old pop rivets.

MY MTD YARD MACHINE WILL TURN OVER BUT WONT START HAS GOOD SPARK NEW STARTER GOOD BATTERY

If you have a B&S engine, there is a float bowl under the carb. Pull it and check for "gunk" preventing the float from operating properly. (It's easier if you pull the carb.) Clean the needle and ports with spray carb cleaner and reassemble.

Wont start

Your problem may be in the kill switch. To check, spray some starting fluid into carburator directly and pull start. If it sputter runs for a few seconds then dies chances are the kill switch is choking engine trottle as a built in safety feature. If you have to hold a bar down while pulling cord, that disengages the switch. You should be able to see if cord extends. If it's kinked I would replace the entire cable. It's cheap and relatively easy, just pay attention to how you take the old one off. B&S engines are very basic and very easy to fix.

I have a Yard Machine Lawn mower by MTD it has a briggs and stratton engine. The pull cord pulls, to easily I might add, but will not start the lawn mower. It doesn't seem to engage the motor. What might...

If you think the rope pulls too easily the engine may not have enough compression. Consider doing a compression test or a leak-down test on the cylinder.

Pull start cord got pinched. Dumb me took off

Yes you can put the spring back in but it takes patience. Wind the spring inside the pully first. Then install the cord on the outside of the pully. Make sure you wind both in correct direction. You probably should replace the cord while you have it apart. The parts would be listed by the engine brand and model number, not by MTD. Probably a Briggs & Stratton engine? You can go to their web site :www.briggsandstratton.com to get part numbers. Or you can try a place like www.jackssmallengines.com
