Trying to install a sitecom wireless network card on my new HP pavilion a6744uk, running Vista Home Premium. It gives me a message that the network cable is unplugged. Device manager shows the device is working. Network Connections shows the card with a red cross and cable unplugged message. When I try to connect it shows Windows Network Diagnostics saying This computer does not have a network adapter installed and configured.

Hi I'm having the exact same problem with a Sitecom WL330 and a BT business hub. Just get unidentified network when trying to connect. Did you resolve your problem? and if so how?
I don not think there is a problem with your laptop. It connects to your network when you use the Ethernet cable, because the wired network is yours. As to the 4 networks to which you are trying to connect with the wireless, they must be secured as they should be. If you want to access them (and why would you since you have your own Internet connection), you will have to ask authorization from the networks owners (your neighbors). If they agree, they will provide you with all the information you require to log on and share their bandwidth.
Have you set up the printer to be shared via the network? You can usually set this up in printer options, through control panel. If the wifi is a closed network, so much the better. That way, nobody else can use the printer. You should be able to do this easily, as long as both computers are connected to the wireless network.
The solution is, get a USB wifi adapter, because that card is done. HP REFUSES to recognize this problem, and since the majority of failures happen after the warranty expires (mine did) HP just says you are SOL. You can get decent wireless adapters for $20, and your wireless problems will be solved. Unfortunately, expect your laptops motherboard/chipset/dc port to fail within a year :(
I assumed you've restarted the router. I only ask as I often have issues like that where some units can see the internet and some can't when freshly connected. The other thing is to check that the adaptor settings for the network card under ipv4 dont have any manual DNS settings and is set to auto unless you are using a public DNS such as Google and then the override settings such as 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 would be fine.
Knowing that Vista is still in its test phases, this would be considered common, not just for vista, but any new product on the market that has only been tested in a closed environment.
Now I have found that sometimes when you surf the web using a wireless card. What happens is those places that you have surfed the web are stored in your network cards preferred network. So it would first be a good idea to dump some of those from the network first. Here is how it is done!
Right click on your the Icon to the left of the light that looks like a mini computer with lines that look like this ))) next to it. This is your wireless network icon. Once you right click on this click on repair, this will cycle through a proces that will release an IP address, and reset the wireless adapter.
If this does not work try to go through the same steps:
Right click on the wireless ICon
click on open network connections
A Network Property Box will open
Right click on the wireless Network connection
Wirless connection property box will open
click on the wireless networks tab
Look for Preferred networks
there should be a window with a ton of networks
you have been near or surf the web from
Delete some of these places from this box
I would delete them all
Now if it is your home network you are trying to get into
manually setup the connection by doing the following:
Click on the add button
You will be asked to put in an SSID
if you setup a network just put the name of that SSID into this box
If a WEP/WPA is setup type in those settings
If it network authentication is OPEN make certain to select OPEN if it is Shared make sure to indicate Share
otherwise you will not be able to get onto the network
click on OK and the network adapter should scan for the network if you did everything correct you should be able to surf the web!
