If the system has the original Dell image, then just after the Dell Bios splash screen should be a black screen with w blue bar at the top with www.dell.com at the top.

At that screen press CTRL + F11 to initiate the PC Restore program.

You can reset your computer back to factory defaults without your disks with the hidden recovery partition built onto you computer.

For XP, Right after you turn on your computer, hold the <CTRL> keyboard button down and keep tapping on the F11 key until the Dell Restore by Symantec Window comes up. Then click Restore then click Confirm.

*If yout computer came with Vista, the steps are a bit different, and they are on the website on the link I provided at the bottom (as well as for XP*

Here's the Dell Webiste with the Step by step instructions to perform the factory reset. Just pick which Operating System your computer came with and follow the steps:

You can contact Dell to obtain a copy of the disc by providing them with your product key usually found on the bottom of the laptop. Then you can wipe out, reinstall to factory default.

Are the cds mandatory to perform recovery on the dell 1420 inspiron? theres no way to perform system recovery with out the discs....no other possible way to restore system settings to factory...

The RECOVERY CD's are specifically for each and every computer and has the WINDOWS license number etc embedded in it and the hard drive and motherboard serial number as well. You can get it back to factory standard by using any original windows CD and using your Wiondows Key number on the sticker on your computer. Then you can afterwards download the hardware drivers, and all the software that originally came with the laptop, from the internet by going the the DELL.COM website and identifying your specific machine by typing in your computer's serial number. It would then (normally does) take you to a page wher you will find all the drivers and sofware needed.

Restoring factory settings on Dell 1501

You can run a system repair with the recovery or operating system disc to get it back to the factory settings. A repair will reset the system, and leave any of your files, pics, and programs that you've put into the machine. If you want to clear everything, and go back to the factory settings, then reformat the hard drive and install a new operating system.
