Freezing bottom 2 shelves not freezing therefore instde temp not maintained. told to throw away, told low on freon or compressor weak. agree or idea?

If Door seals are sealing properly, it’s probably a freon or compressor related problem

Cold air sinks. If evaporator temp is not low enough only the items on bottom of freezer will get cold and possibly freeze - stuff on top will not.
Throw a digital thermometer in there towards the top shelves and I bet your temps are high. Low refrigerant will cause this; furthermore, if you leave the refrigerator door open by accident, the refrigerator will never shut off, the freezer evaporator will freeze over with a block of ice, and the freezer temps will be higher. If that is what happened, simply unplug the unit and allow it to self defrost and then turn it back on for proper operation and make sure that the refrigerator door is properly closed!

if it does not freeze it is because the refrigeration system is low on freon. this will cause the bottom shelfs to not freeze...
you have to decide if it is worth putting the freon back in (they wont fix it because very hard to find)
so you could spend anywhere from $80 to $150 to get the freon back in... then after a while it will leaks out and you will have the same problem
why dont you instead move that money to a new freezer

. Cut everything off for a few minutes then turn it back on and listen for a click from the compressor relay as the compressor tries to start.
Is the compressor motor running.If no check starter/overload relay.

Are the condenser coils on the back warm or room temp. should be warm

evaporator coils are behind the rear cover inside the freezer at the bottom.
observe the frost pattern. Light frost everywhere(NORMAL) or a partial pattern of ice(LOW ON FREON) or nothing(LOW FREON OR COMPRESSOR PROBLEM).
Compressor or freon problem will require a repairman.

Check to see if there is cold air coming from the freezer to the refridgerator side through the vent holes The compressor maybe getting weak or the freon charge maybe low. Does the unit run a long time before it shuts off? 50 degrees is not cold enough for a freezer. You should be around 32 or less.

If is the type of freezer where the shelves are also the evaporator(shelves are very cold and is normal to frost), the fact that only one shelf is iced would indicate the system is low on freon due to a leak. This would also explain the hot walls and compressor. It requires a service man to check the freon level and locate leak and recharge.

It soungs like you may have compressor going bad or a freon leak. Being a 1970 it would not be cost effective to repair.

weak compressor or low on freon

looks like low on freon. that causes freeze up. oddly enough they freeze up when charge is low , just the opposite of what you think they would do. you have a freon leak unfortunately. probably not accessible, and therefore not repairable. i would suggest, cut your losses and buy new. unfortunately for me and all other srevice techs, the days of affordable repair are over, you can now replace cheaper than i can fix and have a warranty and its new... good luck

low on freon. buy new . as freon level drops , ability to feed all shelves falls off. the last shelf to freeze is usually the first one to not freeze ,as charge goes away. time for new, cost to fix to great.
