Is it possible to have two handsets in operation at the same time so two people can be in conversation with the calling party at the same time?
I just called GE/Thomson tech support (1-800-720-2094). GE cordless phones do not allow users to pick up an additional extension so that two people in the house can speak with a caller. He explained that it was for privacy.
I will be taking back my system today. :(
This isn't a "solutoin" perse but an explanation..
this particular phone is an ANALOG phone, which does NOT have the capability to have more than one cordless handset in use.
if one person is on a corded phone, the other on a cordless that would work.
Digital phones allow more than one handset used that the same time.. BUT if you're hearing impaired like I am, digital phones WORK HORRIBLY with noise interference, etc. with my hearing aids.
now THAT is frustrating.
We also have this problem. This makes them inconvenient and worthless. I'll take them back. I always seem to have a problem with GE equipment.

He explained that it was for privacy. I say it is stupidity. Must have been created by a paranoid person! Who wants to walk a phone to another room to hand the phone to that person?! I didn't know this until today and I have had the phone 8 days. I bought two sets on sale for $59 each. Guess I will have to take them back and find one that works right and I will pay closer attention.
THE ONLY SOLUTION I CAN SEE FOR THIS PROBLEM IS TO TAKE THE PHONES BACK WHICH I WILL BE DOING SHORTLY. I HAVE SPENT ENOUGH TIME TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT I WAS DOING WRONG. OH WELL, GUESS IT'S GE'S LOSS.

This has been mighty frustrating to us, also! SURELY we must be able to do this?? Why else would we have 2 phones to begin with?!?!
sure hope there is an answer!
When one person is on the phone, another member of the household can't
pick up another handset and speak. When I've tried to do so, there is
a loud beep and the message says "unavailable" How can I get this
system to work so that two people in the house can talk with a caller?
How stupid
