When you started your contract, the provider should have sent a text with their settings for your phone to work with them. You have to activate this text to activate those settings. If you check your providers web site you can check what these settings should be. Or you can phone your providers helpline to either resend the text or check your settings with you.
Otherwise it could be just a poor signal problem. A great phone signal doesn't mean you will have a good 3G signal.
