Breville BCG450XL Manual Burr Grinder Logo
Posted on Feb 20, 2009

Why is the grind from my Breville BCG450XL in the finest position coming out like a drip grind with a fair amount of dust mixed in? I have an old Solis with exactly the same conical burrs which is grinding too fine and continues to jamb up. The plastic paddles after 10+ years of use have finally worn down so far that they apparently won't eject the coffee. The reason I bought the Breville is because the burrs are the same. When I go as fine as it can go, Turkish, the grounds are way too large and irregular. I just ordered an Iberital Challenge but would like to get the Breville in proper adjustment or get the Solis repaired. Thanks for your help. Ron

The Breville was designed to be used with Pressurized Portafilters, which most Home Espresso Machines have. These filters use a courser grind, so when it says Espresso on the Breville, it's really closer to Drip. The Turkish setting is barely fine enough for Espresso. There is a limiter on the Breville that prevents the user from going any finer, if you crack it open and remove the limiter, you can go as fine as the Solis. Becareful though, the burs can come so close to each other that they can chip and break.

Can i use my Breville coffee grinder BCG450XL 160v purchased in USA but now living in UK

If you want to use equipment like this, or where 160 volt is printed on, you should use a transformer. 240 to 160 V AC.
Modern small electronic equipment most of the time has 100- 240 V AC on them and can be used all over the world on mains within the range.
Older equipment, or things with motors I should not use.

Why when grinder is on finest setting

Did you clean the grinder before using it? Did you run a 1/2 kilo or so of junk beans through to clean out any oil/grease that was in the system from manufacture? How old are the coffee beans? If you grind at a 4 and run it through the drip machine, does the coffee still taste off?

Breville Die Cast 800ESXL Espresso Machine: Problem... Watery espresso. My machine worked great for a year, then all the sudden, the espresso is watery and the basket where the grinds are is full of water...

Hi,

Personnaly, when I use the big filter, the grinds are dry after the extraction, but for the small filter, it's all soggy. If you look at the documentation, ( http://kitchen.manualsonline.com/manuals/mfg/breville/breville_coffeemaker_product_list.html) they say wet coffee grind after extraction is normal.
But did you change the coffee brand ? Or the grinding level ? How do you grind your coffee ? I had big troubbles once with a commercial grinder at my grocery store, it's when I decided to buy my own Breville grinder.

Good luck,

JF

Parts and Grind Selection

The current Kitchenaid A9 burr grinder glass jar is interchangable with the original Hobart/Kitchenaid A9 glass jar; therefor, the gasket should also interchange - contact Kitchenaid customer service to order a gasket.

Setting the grind is accomplished by grasping the body of the ginder in one hand and the grind-selector ring (collar that the jar screws into) in the other. Hold the base tight and turn the selector ring clockwise for a finer grind, counterclockwise for coarser. Be careful not to completely unscrew the selector ring; if you are not sure how much adjustment is left, screw it all the way clockwise until it stops (finest grind); then, back it off, up to one full turn to make the grind coarser.

The selector ring has the words coarse, medium and fine cast into it; these are rough postition markers. There is a triangle cast into the body of the grinder, just above the brand name, that can be used to diral in a preferred level of grind. I use a medium-coarse grind for drip coffee makers; to do likewise, position the selector ring so that the triangle is pointing midway between the words coarse and medium.

Obviously the problem is with your grind, not the Breville. SImply adjust your grind to finer.
Good luck!
