Hard disk capacity increase

Manufacturers rate the capacity of their hard drives in an unformatted state. When you format a hard drive the actual capacity drops approx. 10% and in this case it leaves you with 147Gb capacity.

The maximum is 500GB. For compatibility reasons you should get a 320GB one.

For a 9mm, ATA IDE drive? 320G is the largest I've seen.

You need to change the HDD to increase the disk capacity. If you have more free space in D drive and you want to increase the disk size of C drive , then use partition magic software to increase the C drive partition.

Linux may be on another partition and Windows cannot recognize it, otherwise the MBR could be damaged and you should conect it externally and run a disk check on the drive.

I do not think it is a HDD problem. When you turn it on, are you able to see something on the screen or not? If not, then it is probably problem of the motherboard.

Sattelite A50 has an 42000 rpm IDE Harddisk, buy 40GB or 80 GB.

Normally you can upgrade to a new hard disk to the next bigger size, so from 40 Gb, then perhaps a 60 or even an 80 would work. Even if the BIOS/motherboard would not recognized the new size, Windows XP would and be able to access it.

However, I don't think that the size should really be the main concern. I think that your selection should be based primarily on the power consumption. Most laptops have a preset power distributed to its devices. If you are going to use a bigger size HD with a bigger power consumption, Windows (or even your BIOS) might recognize it but the power distribution might be over worked.

My suggestion would then be go to the next size but keep in mind the power rating/consumption of the old when selecting.

I am enclosing an image of my laptop's HD. Pls note the rating DC+5V 0.7A for this 60Gb HD. The 0.7A is its current consumption/rating.
