Does Volvo cigarette ligher socket accept standard chargers?

I bought a gps system to use in my 1999 Volvo. It worked fine for a few short trips after I charged the battery. I then tried to use the car charger and it wouldn't work. The lighter DOES work, so I know that the circuit is ok.

Do older Volvos have different lighter sockets from the newer ones or was the problem more likely in the charger itself? Should I buy another system and expect it to work or do I have get some fancy Volvo-adaptor-adaptor ?

Thanks

Check the fuse in the car charger, and try in another car. The manual with should show where the fuse location. (because it worked befor you charged it,sounds like the car cord fuse is blown or the cord is defected)

Volvo cigarette lighter keeps blowing fuse

I had this same problem after buying a used 2008 xc 90 and had replaced the fuses numerous times. I finally called the dealer to see about changing the sockets and the girl that took my call told me not to pul the charger in while the car ignition is on. She told me there is a saftey feature on the volvo that shorts itself out if anything is plugged in while the car is on. We have followed that rule now for the past 3 months and have had no problems with the fuse blowing. Once the charger is plugged in I just leave it plugged in and I can attach my phone/ipod while the car is on and it's fine as long as you don't try to plug the charger into the socket while the car is on. Strange I know but it works!!!

Why wont my cigarette lighter work?

It could be the fuse is blown for the lighter socket. If you have something you can plug in to check it (cell phone charger or GPS power cord) try that. What usually happens is the cig lighter itself (the thing you put in the socket and gets hot) shorts out, and blows the fuse.

Cigarette ligher does not work. Which fuse should I check? My manual is in Japanese!!! 1999 Jaguar S -type auto 3.0. Originally for Japanese market

Get a test light and check them all, easier and more accurate than pulling them all and looking at them.
Keep in mind the socket may be good, but the lighter element may be bad.

Cigarette lighter stopped working

Your post is just a tad bit confusing. In most cars these days they have a ciggarette lighter as well as a power port or two.

Is your cigarette light port and your power port, in your eyes, the same thing? If yes, and you've checked the fuse and "it appears to be fine" then I would say that you have a short in your wiring that for some reason isn't tripping the fuse. Unlikely though.

I believe in one car I worked on had two different fuses that went to the ciggarette ligher. Maybe just maybe you have a few different fuses running your ports and you checked some of the fuses but not all of them.

Most cars have fuse boxes in the following locations: Engine Bay, Glove Box, Drivers or passengers side kick panel, trunk.

The most likely spots to check for a fuse box is to the left of your legs while sitting in the drivers seat and underneath the hood.

Hope this helps out,

2000 volvo s70 cigarette lighter won't work

test the lighter socket itself by putting a everyday common voltage tester or "multi-meter"in it. place the positive wire on the tester to the center of the socket and the negative to the side of the socket. if no voltage reading, keep the positive where it is and move the negative probe on your tester to a new location that you "know" is a negative like a screw on the door jam area. ( find an unpainted surface"). if you get a reading now then you know the negative on the socket is not connected somewhere in the path. do the same with the positive..... good luck.
