SOURCE: Same proble, MS BitLocker is error message.

Bitlocker is available for Vista Business, Enterprise and Ultimate. This gives more security to your data files against unauthorized access. Once bitlocker detects theres a major change of hardware, such as master boot record, motherboard replacememt and such, it thinks that the hard drive is moved to another computer. Usually, bitlocker encryption can be disabled using the USB drive that was used to store the codes for decryption.

Vostro 1500 screen blank except for flashing cursor

The good news is that your laptop powers on and you have a display. The bad news is that you laptop is trying to boot up from an OS (operating system software) like XP, Vista, or Win 7. Ether your software is corrupted or you have a problem with the hard drive or hard drive controller.
Press and hold the <Fn> key while powering the system on. This will run the Dell Diagnostics. Another more intense diagnostic program is located on a Dell CD that you should have received with your laptop. Look for one that has "Diagnostics and utilities" listed under the "Contents". You will have to boot from that CD disk. To do this, power on your laptop and tap the <F12> key to bring you to the "One time boot menu". Insert the CD and then select CD/DVD drive and hit <Enter> key. Select the "Run the 32 Bit Dell Diagnostics".
If diagnostics pass then your software is corrupted and needs to be reinstalled.

I am having issues with my laptop Dell Vostro 1510. Getting a black screen and white cursor in the upper left hand corner.

The error code indicates that the system is not able to access or detect any Hard Disk Drive.
If comfortable you can try the following:
1. Open your laptop following the below guide
2. Look for the Hard Disk Drive
3. Remove it from the system
4. Re-seat the Hard Disk drive
5. Re-start the system

If still the HDD is not detected I am afraid to say that the Drive is gone bad and needs a replacement.

Kindly feel free for any further clarification or assistance.

Loading Media Direct instead of Windows

Looks like you have a harddrive problem.

It may be temporary, or the HDD may have failed completely; the latter may be for multiple reasons: impact, overheating, induced electromagnetic field (like a cellphone put in immediate vicinity of the drive), or just bad luck.

With such problems it's always a tough choice:
- try various methods of recovering the drive, reinstalling the system and so on, risking that the drive contents will be even harder to recover by a professional data recovery company
- or leave it as it is and seek professional help.

If you don't have anything so important on the HDD that would justify the big $$$ needed for data recovery, you can try various system recovery tools, and if they fail, just replace the harddrive with a new one and reinstall operating system from scratch.

Of course, if your laptop is still under warranty, you should call Dell for a warranty repair.

Dell media direct won't work

Hello,

Here is the steps,

1.Turn on your computer.

2.Insert the reinstallation media (Dell Media Direct CD/DVD) into the CD/DVD drive, then restart the computer.

3. press F12 when the bios page comes up and then select CD/DVD drive from the boot menu.

"Option 1" from the menu if you wish to use all of the hard drive for you operating system installation. This is the most common selection and how is your computer was originally shipped to you, unless you specified an operating system partition size at the time you ordered you computer.

"Option 2" to designate a size for your operating system and have a data partition. This allows you to specify a size for the operating system partittion, leaving the remainder, of the hard drive configured as a "data" partition ("D")

4. Once you have prepared the drive and you have returned to the main recovery menu, remove the installation media and replace it with you operating system reinstallation media. Select the option to reboot your computer. If your computer does not automatically start the media, press <F12> to access the boot menu and select the Cd/DVD boot option.

5.Install your operating system, select the Primary partition when prompted. If you have two hard drives, select the primary partition on the same disk where hte media direct partition resides. Once the OS is installed and the necessary drivers are installed you can begin the reinstallation of the dell mediaDirect software.

Good Luck,
Austin

Media Direct Problem witn more then 2 disk paritons.

Usually Media Direct is pre-installed on a Dell Portable System. It is installed on a media direct partition. If you reinstalled windows and if you formatted yor hard drive then you may have to reinstall media direct in 2 different ways.

Media direct 2 requires to have windows installed first.
Media direct 3 requires to have the Media Direct CD run first.
