The lenses have a focus motor built into them.when the camera is set to auto focus, once you press the shutter button, the motor activates to set the correct focus. VR is for motion stabilization. Turn off AF on lenses and camera and see if noise stops.

SOURCE: Auto focus at full zoom not responding Nikon D80 with 18-200mm VR

Hi - I own this lens and it manually focuses at all focal lengths (hard to see at 18mm unless your subject is extremly close). You may need to get the lens checked. BTW - Mine was set as follows when I checked for you:

  • D80 was "on"
  • M/A
  • VR = Off
  • Normal (not Active)
Hope this helps!

SOURCE: Nikon DX 55-200mm lens

Hi, I had this problem and found that the level inside the camera for the exposure shutter was bent inwards. This was preventing the lens from adjusting the exposure and also from autofocusing. To fix I just bent it back outwards

Your camera is still under the one year Nikon warranty. Call Nikon's repair depot at 1-800-NIKON-US (1-800-645-6687) 9AM-8PM EST, Monday to Friday. They will verify your warranty and assist you in returning it for repair.

My nikon 105mm VR AS F2.8 makes a strange noise while focus and then after i remove my finger from the shutter it make a click noise as well ? is that a problem ?

As far as your focus is happening htere is no case to worrry. If the camera is set to auto focus then while you point if the focus is set right , you can just ignore this case. However if the focussing is not perfect it is possible that there could be some dust dirt or sand particles in the system which incidentely must be looked into by opening the camera. the click could be that the focus is falling in line and as such need not worry much. Use the manual focus to extremes and try a gentle tap to get any such foreign particles out of the system. I would advice not to open the camerra unless there is a serious focus fault. Otherwise continue to make use for the best. Good day

Nikkor af-s 18-200 VR not focusing

Please check your focus settings in the camera menu. Play around with the focus point from Single to 11 points. Also, try Auto mode as a quick way to test if the focus is working

I have seen the focus gears fail on these. They come as a unit. It will need to be replaced, not a DIY
